flashing ? disk icon....in OS X?
So, I have a friend that is running 10.1 (she thinks) on a Quicksilver (not MDD), but she doesn't know what model it is. When she got to work today, she says that when she starts up, she gets a flashing disk icon with a question mark. Now, I wasn't aware that you ever got this with OS X, but...
Then, the flashing disk icon magically turns into a happy face (in OS X?) and then back into the flashing disk, and she gets a message that "the file system map is inconsistent" and that perhaps she should try starting without extensions.
I'm operating under the assumption that she's not running OS X like she thinks, but is rather running OS 9. Either that, or her startup disk preferences somehow got changed back to starting up from OS 9.
Now, if this is the case, I know that she needs to re-bless her system folder, but in order to do this, she needs to somehow startup, but the only disks that she has are install disks, that go directly to the install screen, hardware test, and system restore disks.
If anyone has any ideas how to fix this, I would very much appreciate it..
Thanks in advance.

If it says to try staring up with extensions off, then restart while holding the shift key. That will disable extensions and such on OS9 and has a similar effect in OSX as well.
<strong>It sounds more like her startup disk is corrupted somehow. Is there any chance you could loan her *your* Mac OS X Install CD and have her run the Disc Utility to try to repair it?

I can't loan her my CD, she's down at the coast, and I'm in your neck of the woods, I'll try telling her the shift key thing...
thanks, Brad.
