eMac won't startup after kernal panic

I had a kernal panic while I was usking my eMac running 10.2.4, and after I restarted, the computer will not get past the screen with the grey Apple and spinning wheel. I will let it sit there for an hour and the wheel will spin endlessly. I've booted up on my Jaguar CD and repaired permissions as well as ran disk first aid. That didn't help at all. I've tried restarting with peripherals disconnected and that didn't help either. What can I do without reinstalling OS X?

Do you have to preserve the contents of your disk, or do you also need to keep the old system intact as well? Because you COULD just do an archive install - it moves your current system into a "Previous Systems" folder and then installs a new system in its place. You can move anything from the previous system to the new one. This is what you should probably do as it will not delete anything, it only adds a new OS X install.

One thing you could do is check the filesystem using the fsck -y command in single user mode. You get to this by holding down command and s on reboot, a whole lot of text will pop up, type fsck -y and it will go through and check/fix problems with the filesystem.

    Hope that helps

another idea, just leave it at that screen while it's booting. leave it all night. every now and then computers will take a LOOONG time to boot up, but will go through if you give them enough time.

then you can get your stuff off and go from there.

also, do you know anyone else with a Mac? if so, drop your machine into target disk mode and get your files off, then wipe it clean.
