It was obvious before that Quicktime was on the way out and I have mixed feelings about it. I think media would be better transitioning to H.264/5 and ProRes but it doesn't change the fact that people still produce videos in other formats and they need to be converted so there needs to be a codec framework somewhere to allow this conversion. As long as Quicktime Pro continues to function properly and works with codecs, this isn't so much of a problem even if it's still 32-bit. Having to re-encode hundreds of videos and either lose quality or increase file size just to get them to preview because they are in some legacy format is not going to be a nice task.
What would be quite nice is if Quicktime Pro was turned into some open source media app so that things like Perian and Flip4Mac could be used no problem forever more and updated to 64-bit and it would just exist as a standalone app, not integrated to the OS at all. It would function as a transcoder with basic editing capability. It could perhaps be merged in with Compressor and allow anyone to make plugins for it to convert all sorts of videos and do basic editing. Compressor needs an overhaul anyway and a price cut.

I don't know if that's entirely true. I don't remember this in QuickTime with AVI files prior to Mavericks.

When I say files should still open in Quicktime, I mean the last useful version of Quicktime - Quicktime Pro, not Quicktime X; I always append the X to the useless version. If that's a screenshot of what happens when you open a .avi in QTX, it may be trying to auto-convert the movie from .avi to another format. It shouldn't hang like that but they maybe didn't bother testing to see if 3rd party plug-ins worked properly.
It looks like they've deprecated the core system Quicktime components and moved to AV Foundation and there's not much sense in Quicktime X linking to a deprecated set of frameworks. When it comes to the next version of OS X, I'd guess Quicktime Pro will stop working as they'll remove all the core Quicktime support from the OS and Perian etc will not be usable. One positive is that AV Kit does seem to support plug-ins, see the last comment here:

This should mean it's possible for a Perian rewrite to work with AV Kit but there's not much chance of that happening given that the developers stopped working on it. I have that problem as well! It's very annoying, as I have many movies in .avi. You can see the movie-preview icon with files in .mkv or .mp4, but most of my files are .avi!

One of the DivX people said they are looking into the issue:
They maybe didn't bother to check that Quicktime was being deprecated so haven't prepared for it. They'll now have to make an AV Kit plugin instead. There are 3rd party codecs for FCPX. If the Perian developers that stopped working on it could make a Perian codec that worked with FCPX, that would be fine as it can be used to convert and edit those files and transcode to H.264 and of course that plugin would work in Quicklook and Quicktime X.
It seems to have a Spotlight component too. It mentions Spotlight will index the video contents so I guess you'll be able to search videos by metadata (aspect, format etc) but that seems unnecessary. You can remove the Spotlight plugin from /Library/Spotlight/Video.mdimporter manually to avoid any indexing.

But if it still plays the files but no preview, who cares? You probably played around with settings
