.avi files no longer showing their movie-preview icon on my desktop or in Finder.

Can I fix this? Repairing permission didn't fix it. And QuickLook in no longer playing them either.

uh... what type of codec player do you have???

Please list all program that has to do with media player

If you have MplayerX like I do then preview will show up

But if it still plays the files but no preview, who cares? You probably played around with settings

    Is this the issue?

    Does Perian need an update?

It says here that Quicklook has changed to use AV Kit rather than Quicktime:

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1647722

That's bad as it means no WMV previews either, possibly no codecs used in high-end video cameras. The files should still open ok so Perian and other codecs will work but no previews and no viewing with space-bar.

Someone here reckons AV Kit won't support plugins going forward:

    http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=24719099#p24719099

"I just had a re-look at the developer video and the only support in terms of 'non-Apple provided CODEC's' was a piece regarding the QuickTime moderniser API about moving movies/audio from formats supported via third party plugins to the new formats that are natively supported by the operating system out of the box. Long story short I think Apple is taking the approach that the CODEC's they provide is all one needs but I could be wrong as I've been having difficulty finding documentation regarding AV Foundation or AV Kit without a whole heap of worthless results coming up on Google or Bing."

A comment later on makes note of a function QTMovieModernizer, which is to convert old files over, also mentioned here:

    http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/335/55641

It was obvious before that Quicktime was on the way out and I have mixed feelings about it. I think media would be better transitioning to H.264/5 and ProRes but it doesn't change the fact that people still produce videos in other formats and they need to be converted so there needs to be a codec framework somewhere to allow this conversion. As long as Quicktime Pro continues to function properly and works with codecs, this isn't so much of a problem even if it's still 32-bit. Having to re-encode hundreds of videos and either lose quality or increase file size just to get them to preview because they are in some legacy format is not going to be a nice task.

What would be quite nice is if Quicktime Pro was turned into some open source media app so that things like Perian and Flip4Mac could be used no problem forever more and updated to 64-bit and it would just exist as a standalone app, not integrated to the OS at all. It would function as a transcoder with basic editing capability. It could perhaps be merged in with Compressor and allow anyone to make plugins for it to convert all sorts of videos and do basic editing. Compressor needs an overhaul anyway and a price cut.

I don't know if that's entirely true. I don't remember this in QuickTime with AVI files prior to Mavericks.

It just hangs here (no beach ball, it's just questionable if it's actually moving). This screenshot is of embedded HUD within the QuickTime X Player:

When I say files should still open in Quicktime, I mean the last useful version of Quicktime - Quicktime Pro, not Quicktime X; I always append the X to the useless version. If that's a screenshot of what happens when you open a .avi in QTX, it may be trying to auto-convert the movie from .avi to another format. It shouldn't hang like that but they maybe didn't bother testing to see if 3rd party plug-ins worked properly.

    http://www.imore.com/os-x-mavericks-preview-av-kit-simplifies-quicktime-transition

It looks like they've deprecated the core system Quicktime components and moved to AV Foundation and there's not much sense in Quicktime X linking to a deprecated set of frameworks. When it comes to the next version of OS X, I'd guess Quicktime Pro will stop working as they'll remove all the core Quicktime support from the OS and Perian etc will not be usable. One positive is that AV Kit does seem to support plug-ins, see the last comment here:

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1647722

So rather than components going into /Library/Quicktime, they go into /Library/Video/Plug-ins. This should mean it's possible for a Perian rewrite to work with AV Kit but there's not much chance of that happening given that the developers stopped working on it. This guy suggests AV Foundation isn't meant to be extended that way:

    http://www.subfurther.com/blog/2013/06/15/av-foundation-and-the-void/

but he makes a comparison to Battlestar Galactica and talks about his anime movies so he might not be the best source. FCPX is based on AV Foundation and it supports media plug-ins for 3rd party formats but it likes to convert everything to ProRes. This kind of setup would prevent you from opening a movie, chopping it and saving without encoding.

Going forward, what I would like to happen is for Quicktime Pro to be wrapped up into a standalone application along with the OS frameworks it needs that will be removed later on and then it can still be used with old plug-ins for conversion, even if this functionality is merged into Compressor, that would be ok. If the old plug-ins are easy enough to port, they will need to be moved to AV Kit.

I have that problem as well! It's very annoying, as I have many movies in .avi. You can see the movie-preview icon with files in .mkv or .mp4, but most of my files are .avi!

Can someone do something? Any idea?

One of the DivX people said they are looking into the issue:

    http://forums.divx.com/divx/topics/quicktime_in_os_x_mavericks_shows_converting_which_never_completes

They maybe didn't bother to check that Quicktime was being deprecated so haven't prepared for it. They'll now have to make an AV Kit plugin instead. There are 3rd party codecs for FCPX. If the Perian developers that stopped working on it could make a Perian codec that worked with FCPX, that would be fine as it can be used to convert and edit those files and transcode to H.264 and of course that plugin would work in Quicklook and Quicktime X.

Thanks for the reply! I use VLC to watch my movies, so my problem is just to see a movie-preview as an icon for my files...

I just came across this Quickook plugin for 10.9 and later based on VLC that's intended to offer equivalent functionality to Perian:

    https://github.com/Marginal/QLVideo

It looks like it's fairly new (about a month old) so might have a few bugs. The newest version is here:

    https://github.com/Marginal/QLVideo/releases/tag/rel-140

It seems to have a Spotlight component too. It mentions Spotlight will index the video contents so I guess you'll be able to search videos by metadata (aspect, format etc) but that seems unnecessary. You can remove the Spotlight plugin from /Library/Spotlight/Video.mdimporter manually to avoid any indexing.
