Get some icons from <a href="http://www.xicons.com," target="_blank">www.xicons.com,</a> e.g. those basic ones with different colors.
In finder, choose the folder(s) you want to change. Click apple-i, choose the picture on it (preview);
on an other window go and choose the apple-i from the color icon that you want (e.g. basic blue or red); apple-c (=copy) the image of it, apple-v (paste) it to the folder you want to have it.
Repeat this with every folder you want to have a different color or icon.
If you wanted some folders to have a different color from the default, this will do that.
If you want to edit an icon ... need an icon editor.
