It's not necessary to use it, it mainly frees up space. It shouldn't damage any system files, the cache files and log files are temporary items but you can flush caches by doing a safe boot holding the shift key. If you need to free up space, try it out and see what files it recommends deleting (don't do any automatic cleanup), otherwise don't bother.
