Here is my take, a larger iPad only makes sense, it will happen eventually.
However I see a different possibility for the machines new name. That is to leverage the great success Apple has had with Mac Book AIR and its marketing cache. MBA has been a run away success story and Haswell has turned them into dynamite laptops, so maybe this is a reverse halo being applied to the hardware.
As for iPad Pro, that can't really be far away. It will likely be something in the 12" range and likely with a beefed up A7. The problem is we already see this processor in cell phones and tablets so the only reason for a larger power demand in an iPad Pro would be power to the display. More specifically power to the back light. The problem is by the time this tablet ships Apple should have a line on lower power displays So I'm not convinced that iPad Pro is the reason for this power supply.

If they go that route, I will buy one and start writing iOS apps. I like the paradigm of an interactive display. It's something I've paid attention to for many years. At one point cintiqs were only 15". Before that graphics tablets used serial connections. Now get off my lawn.

That was the first thing I thought when I heard the name iPad Air during the keynote…
13" iPad Pro w/Retina Display & optional Keyboard Smart Covers/Cases…
