Number keypad won't work without option or shift in osx?

The numeric keypad on the right side of my Apple Extended USB Keyboard won't type anything unless I hold down the shift or option key. Then it types numbers properly. This is true with num lock on (LED lights) or off.

This is true in BBEdit, Word, and Text Edit.

It Only happens in OSX, not OS9.

It worked fine until a day or two ago - could it have something to do with the 10.2.4 update?

btw, the number keys above the alphabet keys work fine.

Any ideas? I've looked around in system preferences and don't see any way to enable / disable this.

Help?

I am not sure what would have caused this but I would look inside your International Pref Pane and make sure that you have your keyboard layout set to the correct settings. Also take a look at Keycaps, it may help in trouble shooting your problem since it displays your current keyboard layout.

and clean up a little bit:

    delete everything in ~/Library/Caches/.

no harm will be done, you'll just throw away the cache. the cache stores things which are often used, but gets sometimes corrupt. so, if you delete it, you give the OS the opportunity to clean up.
