iApps to remain free?

iCal was first available via iDisk, is it likely that future iApps will only be released this way. If so we will all be compelled to have a .mac account or buy new hardware to get new or updated iApps.





I hope this doesn't happen but it would not supprise me given the mood that Steve Jobs was in at MWSF. I wonder if that would make .mac good value or upset their loyal customers even more.



Just a thought.

    If they did make iApps only available though .Mac accounts it would make .Mac more of a value to people like me that signed up for it. I don't see Apple doing that though. Apple uses things like iTunes, iPhoto and other things to get people to upgrade and switch. I didn't download iCal from my iDisk I downloaded it off the iCal web page. As of right now you need OS 10.2 to run iCal they are currently using the iApps to push people in to upgrading to the latest OS.

    Wouldn't make much of a difference to me. If .mac customers get first crack at things like that then that's fine as long as the non .mac users get the update/new version within a week

    Well I just think that Apple could say there are two ways of getting iApps and updates.



    1. Buy some new hardware.



    2. Get a .mac account.



    I am suggesting that they might no make iApps available free to existing customers, only those with a .mac account.

    Maybe I'm wrong, but I seem to remember that iApps have always been availbale via your iDisk. So why would the fact that iCal was also available via iDisk mean anything?

    Anyone can get iCal and publish their calendars using webdav. Anyone can get iPhoto and put their jpegs on a web server.

    With a .mac account, the integration is more seamless and iCal has more functionality. And so does iPhoto. The iApps makes it very easy for grandma, dad or me to do these things when used with .mac
