Can I capture TV from my DV camecorder?

I am doing a project for school and I need some video clips from a video tape to use in a powerpoint presentation. Is it possible to capture video from the tape onto the DV camecorder? Do I use the, i think they are called "AV Cables" (Red, White and Yellow Cables)?



Any comments are appreciated.

    Uh, I am unsure of how to procede with the capturing. I have a cannon zr-25 camecorder and I am trying to get video onto it from the tv. What do i do? I plugged in the av cables into the tv and if i record it records the things the camera sees through the lense. Should i use an S-Video cable? Should I plug the av cables directly into the vcr? I am lost here. Please help.

    put it on VTR I believe. it should be able to do video pass through and you don't even have to record onto tape. it'll just pass the signal through firewire to the computer. at least that's how it works on my sony camcorder

    My GL1 has to be set into "VTR" mode to record from the A/V cable. Your camera probably has something like it. Just press record+pause at the same time and it should show on the camera what it receives through the A/V cables. (Oh, and make sure it is plugged into the video out port of the VCR. I spent an hour troubleshooting my teacher's setup)

    Yep, it does work, I have done it, albeit after a lot of fiddling about with various connectors.



    Provided that you can see the VCR output on the screen/viewfinder of the camera, plug the Firewire cable into the camera and Mac, get iMovie running and off it will go. The quality isn't super-duper (VHS isn't the most wonderful video format for computer use), but it's perfectly usable.



    You may need to spend some time on the VCR manual (yeas, sacrilege, I know!) to see what outputs it can give: high-end VCRs tend to support more options, such as S-Video, but you can usually drag something usable out one way or another. Personally I use a SCART adaptor which is switchable for input or output plugged directly into the VCR, but then mine doesn't do S-Video out (booh!).



    Domestic TVs tend to be set up more for input than output, so I'd go direct to the VCR if I were you, MafiaMac.



    Keep us posted, plenty of experience here on this topic.



    As for the testicle thing, save it for when you really need it.
