Apple may be re-thinking .Mac

I went to download the iDisk Utility at <a href="http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/idiskutility.html"; target="_blank">http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/idiskutility.html</a>;

and to the right, it says the following:

System Requirements

-Mac OS X 10.1.2 or later

-400 MHz G3 processor or better

-128MB RAM

-Mac account for enhanced features

You need a .Mac account to access the iDisk at all, here it says you need it for "enhanced features"

Typo, or a sign of things to come?

    I think it means you have to pay up for .Mac to get the advanced features as opposed to using what it calls a ".Mac Trial Account", i.e. your old iTools account.

    The "advanced features" bit refers to the ability to perform backups live to your iDisk by clicking one button. It's nice to be able backup to a very remote site, but not having .Mac doesn't cripple Backup in any way.

    A tangent of sorts, but you don't technically *need* a .Mac account to access an iDisk. I can access public folders on iDisks just fine without a .Mac account...

    Actually, backup requires a .Mac membership. You can't start it up if you don't have your .Mac info typed in your internet preferences.

    Oh, well, learn something every day. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    Chances of me trashing my .Mac account settings: nil.
