Alright Fran, who's still on a Newton?

I can get a clean 2100 from my neighbor, I wanted to buy it from him 4 years ago but he wouldn't sell it. Then we both sorta forgot about it, now he's moving, and he just wants to get rid of some excess. Incedentally, he's respondsible for unleashing me into the mac-rumor scene: I joined looking for info on the sadly never to be seen replacement. Anyway, I can have it for about the price of a Palm Zire. He's got the NiMH battery, but we don't know if it works because he lost the power adapter and it hasn't been charged for over 2 years, but he has the AA battery adapter, a 33.6 modem, the keyboard, a serial plug, a couple of stylii, and a nice leather portfolio that holds the 2100 and the keyboard together. I haven't seen any cases like this on eBay, it's some 3rd party dark brown leather job his sister bought for him back when he first got it. Lost all the discs, <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" /> but we popped batteries in it and it work fine, backlight comes on, scuff free, but dusty.



Should I get it? I want to set it up as a word processor to sync with my windows machine and work with RTF documents. I know there's some Newton software about the net but all I want is for it to sync and transfer RTF files to my PC for use with word.



Also, linear flash cards seem to cost a lot. 32MB cards seem to be more than what I'd pay for the Newton! Is there any way to use ATA? There's a driver for ATA, I checked, but the guy wants 50 Euros! Fvck that, then I have to buy the card, and still won't be sure if it will work.



Any reccommendations from the Newtonites?

    The Rechargable battery has a low shot at life. If it hasn't been charged in 2 years, I doubt there's much left. Then again, I've been proven wrong before. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />



    Flash cards do cost a good amount, unfortunately. Let me try and dig up some old links I had for some 'deals' and I'll get back to you.

    I'm still on my Newton, but I do find I use it less and less these days.



    I'm getting an iPod in the next week or so, so I'll probably have all my addresses and phone numbers on that. Which means the Newton will get even less use.



    I'll probably just sell it (Newton MP 2000). Not sure if you can get much for them these days.

    Regarding the battery... see if you can rig it up so you are using one of the deeper cycle charges which completly discharges and conditions it first. To get the best charge (From what I understand) you may have to do this once or twice. We did it with an old rechargable we bought for my Mom's ancient handycam...



    It seemed to work fine, but it was kinda wonky to set up on the charger.

    Actually matsu, your best bet is to use the AA cage and get some nice rechargable AA batteries, like the Rayovac 1600mah. But I know for a fact you can get some 2000mah AA like from here: <a href="http://www.batteriesamerica.com/"; target="_blank">http://www.batteriesamerica.com/</a>;

    Those would have a higher run time than the NiMH pack. And you can't beat the price, $3.50 a cell. Just be sure to get a charger that supports it.

    Newton still rocks the house, just wish NewTen package installer would work over ethernet, perhaps it will soon.
