After initally saying they would have aluminum backs instead of stainless steel, they now say the upcoming models will stay as they are currently. I would suspect lower prices and, of course, the fabled 40 Gig. Maybe MPEG 4?
If the drives can't handle the speeds of FW400, what if anything does FW800 have to offer?

1. Apple will quickly migrate all devices to FW800 because there really is no cost penalty.
2. FW800 can utilize different cable types but more importantly in the case of the iPod it handles device Abitration much more efficiently which will be a boon if the future offers Plugging your iPod into the home Rendezvous Network.
As of now I will not purchase a device that doesn't support FW800. It's clear that Apple will revamp the whole lineup as quickly as possible. I too thought initially that it was overkill but now when there isn't much of a price hit coupled with what the future brings for Home Networks.

So they make up a rumor about something happening... and then "Confirm" that nothing will change...
There won't be bluetooth, as it's pointless, too slow to do anything at all; there won't be fw800 as it's not needed and would add to the cost; and there won't be spdif, you copy music to ipods via fw, it pays for apple to keep it that way and they won't put spdif on as an output as it allows perfect copies - against drm policies.
But there will be a 40, just not shipping until late april and they will be prettier.

WTF kind of logic are you using here? I would agree the Bluetooth probably won't be added but then again I have my doubts that Bluetooth is a technoology that will significantly change the way I use my computers. However you're dead wrong on FW800. It's not going to be more expensive than FW400 enough warrant leaving it off. Apple doesn't have DRM policies other than you can't add music from another library. SPDIF doesn't violate and "perfect copies" of mp3's sound funny as mp3's are a lossy compressed format.
I "know" FW800 will be on the next iPod I'd put money on it.
Bluetooh is a longshot but the iPod can sync Addressbook data so who knows?
Spdif is a very longshot but it would be cool nontheless for easy hookup to existing Home Theater receivers.
So, if we were to have FW800 added onto each iPod, would that still allow for the 99% of us that only have FW400 to sync our iPods to our computers? Or will it be a FW400/800 type either/or setup?

I just added about a dozen CDs to my iTunes collection. For me personally, I'm still less than 4GB!
Now, if the rumors of a vPod (iPod + pictures and video) are true. Larger, color screen; sync w/iPhoto...then the space makes a bit more sense. But even then, My wife (who is the photog in the family) only has like 2GB of photos + 3-4GB of music. Still WAY below the 20GB drive out there.
Just playing devil's advocate. I'd rather the $ went into a color display and iPhoto synch. That would round out the iPod nicely.
For me a 40 GB iPod makes sense... I have about 20 GBs worth of music, and it would be cool to carry HUGE movies and files on my iPod. It would be cool to show iMovies off of my iPod through the TV as well... Remember, 40 GBs may not be completely necessary, but that doesn't make it bad.
With digital out I might actually consider an iPod. I rip everything at nearly 300 VBR so 40 GB would also be great. Audiophiles have tried to resist the cheap and dirty lure of mp3s With digital out and massive storage, I would be able to get decent compressed audio into my home theater...
Although, I'm still holding out for a wifi component for this purpose.
Comments
1. 40GB Maximum
2. Bluetooth.
3. FW800
4. MPEG4 Support
5. Digital Output SPDIF

While I look forward to mp4 support the thought of re-ripping over 5000 songs again makes me shudder...
it would make for a killer music tool

Why would an iPod need this? Why do you think they'd build it in?...or is it just a request?

think about that...

Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but what good is a slow (720 kbps) wireless connection on an mp3 player?

it would be nice to be able to sync the calendars and contacts via Bluetooth
also gives possibility to share contact information with friends on the road
also... BLUETOOTH KEYBOARD to allow input into the iPod...

What about the miracle maker software?

I dod think there will be a firmware update to run MPEG4
