They seem to have saved a couple of bucks by choosing USB over Firewire.

Actually, I've just had a thought: a USB vacuum cleaner would be really useful for sucking the filth out of keyboards... anyone got some startup capital?
USB for power is far superior to FireWire, at least with my PowerBook. USB charges while the PowerBook is sleeping. FireWire does not.

My ipod charges while my powerbook sleeps. Wierd, I don't think it did before...
Well, according to the latest MacUser magazine a crafty Brit has design a computer mouse that looks like a steam iron. I would post pics or links but I can't find any and: MacUser isn't covering that story on their website.
Soon all our peripherals will look like household appliances. Personally I'm waiting for a firewire coffee maker.

OH YEAH!
Give me a copper-firewire-caffeine-machine-gun at 3200Mbps. Integrate some scheduling software through iCal alarms so my iBook can have my coffee ready for me when I get up.
Blame Apple, not FireWire. FireWire's spec doesn't disallow passthrough power.
In fact, FireWire is far superior to USB with regard to bus power. USB supports 1.5 watts max while FireWire supports 15 watts.

apple says 45 watts
[quote]While USB 2.0 allows at most 2.5W of power ? enough for a simple, slow device like a mouse ? FireWire devices can provide or consume up to 45W of power, plenty for high-performance disk drives and rapid battery charging. That?s why iPod only needs one cord for both data and power.

Why would I do this? I can charge my Nokia phone with my PowerBook while it's in my briefcase.
Seems like the same would apply for a toothbrush, no?

You know, I tried this the other day to see if I could charge my iPod while my PB slept, but it wouldn't.
Is there anything special you do to get this to work?
I tried that as well, and:
It does work!
1. I ejected ipod first
2. Put comp. to sleep
3. ipod displays apple logo then makes these funny clicks, and then starts charging, moreover it unlocks, so you can controll it.)
Whrn i woke up my ti it was mounted again on the desktop.
OS X 10.2.4, 1ghz Ti.
funny..

well, what os (10.2.?) and what powerbook do you have? I have the 1ghz, superdrive, and 10.2.4 ofcourse.
Soon all our peripherals will look like household appliances. Personally I'm waiting for a firewire coffee maker.
I have a Rev. A PBG4 and 10.2.3 and the method above definitely does not work.

I frankly can't remember seeing the ipod charge in sleep mode before 10.2.4, but then my powerbook is new as well, so it could be either.
Or some obscure third reason...

If you need a 45W toothbrush, I suspect there's something going badly wrong...

Then again if you need an USB toothbrush something has gone extremely badly wrong . . .
