So...does this mean a PDA is in Apple's future?

Among a couple of other roles, it is said he was on the Newton team. I'm sure he's a talented guy who is an asset to Apple in a number of ways; yet, with his background it's hard not to jump to some obvious conclusions.

Congratulations Fran441; albeit I am also waiting for some sort of cool mobile phone (iPhone) over a Newton replacement PDA.

Okay, so we know what he *did*, and we know he's supposed to be a VP reporting to Avie, but... VP of *what*?

    Apple Campus Garbage Collection Team?

Well the development turnaround of a hardware product at Apple is usually 18-24 months. If Sakoman was recruiting for a Phone or PDA project, it makes sense that someone of his stature would be hired at the top end of the development cycle.

So any "iPhone/PDA scheduled for MWNY" threads can be effectively discounted. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Of course, the most likely explanation is that there is a boatload of Apple software in the works, including an Office suite, and Avie needed someone who can concentrate on the Apps side while he's busy cooking up 10.3 with metadata.

I think this is probably a good guess. I guess that Steve Sakoman will be in charge of the software for the digital devices that Apple will be coming up with. Sina Tamaddon, Senior VP of Applications, would be in charge of an Office Suite, I think.

He's really good at OS and apps for mobile devices. But Apple is not producing a PDA. I repeat, Apple is not producing a PDA. Because other devices (mostly devices PEOPLE ACTUALLY BUY) have PDA qualities.

He's going to be managing software.

Incidentally, I'd posit a new hardware meta-platform (not an OS, a reference JVM really) that works across different iDevices, in tandem with an OS that makes the devices work and runs a GUI. Write an applet and it'll run on (say) iPod and any other HYPOTHETICAL devices like the HYPOTHETICAL iPhone. Off-the-shelf and open source components make up this meta-OS (I suppose I mean 'portable runtime') which yer man there manages.

If this isn't cukky his job is to make sure app developers -- mostly internal -- are able to write portable apps. He works with the hardware team to make sure this layer works on top of their hardware, with different input methods and so on.

But hey, what do I know?
