HELP
I just rebooted to install new firmware and the Computer started in osx. The other harddrive with classic and all my important files (almost 70 Gigs) are Gone. I don't know if the files are erased because i simply don't see the icon in the OSX desktop, i can't start classic or boot into OS9, and the disc utilities doesn't display anything!!! HELP!!! If it's not checked it will explain the hard drive not showing on the desktop. The other thing to check, if you want to boot into OS9 is this. Open system preferences and click the start-up disc. You should have a choice of system folders to boot from. If OS 9 shows up boot into it.
I highly doubt it just dissapeared...so try option one first, then move onto option 2. If neither of these work, you may have a larger problem.
Oh and you want to choose the option for repair. If it fails the first time run it again. it can take 2 or 3 passes. If that doesn't go then you have a broader problem.

Something that sounds similar has happened to me several times over the last 6 months. I boot from my X drive, and one or both of my other two drives just don't show. I've tried probing the bus, but the drives are not found. I've never lost anything, though. The drives always eventually reappear intact. I replaced a drive and the PRAM battery, but it keeps happening occassionally. Not sure why.
Try zapping the PRAM and restarting. (Hold Apple + option + p + r, wait until you hear start chime twice). That seems to do it for me. If necessary, zap the PRAM and boot from an OS 9 CD. Try to use the start-up control panel from the CD to select the proper start-up drive.
I always figured I had this problem because I have a heavily tweaked machine (original G3 with a rev C rom). Hope this helps. Sorry for contributing to your inappropriate use of this forum.

Hey - It sounded like "zapping the PRAM" was news to you, so just to clarify how it works, you have to hold down that key combination IMMEDIATELY after starting or rebooting your machine. Keep holding down those keys until the start up chime sounds at least twice. Just punching up that key combination as you go about your business won't do much accept possibly open up a print dialog box.
How 'bout that G5? And the underwater gigawire glove? Gonna set the industry on fire...
