iPhoto/iMovie presentaion hub device
All this talk of the next iPod and the possible "Lucida" digital camera has got me thinking about what possibilities have we all missed when considering what the next Apple digitial hub device might be.
Then it hit me... something that syncs with iPhoto and lets you take your PHOTO library with you where ever you go! PDAs by Palm & Handspring let you take your calendar and contacts with you. The iPod lets you take your music with you. But what is there that lets you take your digital photos with you? Also, how can you show all those great iMovies you've created?
I propose that the next handheld, flat panel, stylis driven gizmo by Apple will have as it's main function MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION. All in the palm of your hand.
What do you think of that?

Over spring break I took some 200 photos of Italy and I went to this girls house that I went to italy with to wait for the limo for prom. and she takes out her italy photo album and right then and there it hit me how GREAT it would be to have a small pocket-sized album that I could show all of my pictures on... I mean it could be the picture version of the iPod... clonenode has a point about this and I dont think it is an april fools joke
probly will never happen, but it would be nice if it did....
This is exactly the device talked about on the eve of... okay the whole week prior to the iPod intro. And while many shot the idea down I was all for it (and still am). I'm kinda past the prime-age of MP3ing (but even I got an iPod) while video to me is and always has been very cool. Geez just imagine being able to bring a movie to the office ... umm ... for lunch time use (incase my boss is reading).
But think about it for a second...
Just got back from a cool vacation and now you go to see your folks or uncle or brother or well whatever... and they want you to bring the photos.
Or even better... you're going on a business trip to do a presentation.
In one case (family) you pull out your iPod-II (?) and pass it around and in the other instead of lugging a laptop you reach into your pocket and show everyone your iPod-II and then connect it to the projector. Tell me everyone else at that meeting wouldn't want one! Anyway when they released the iPod I was totally bummed since something like that (video) would be a real hit.
Now it just hit me, maybe a device like this of will still come... MPEG4 could have been the reason it didn't make it yet. I can alway hope right? Maybe Apples been saving it as the 'killer app' to showcase MPEG4.
I work with a lot of people who travel all over the world to do talks etc (Research Scientists) and I know for a fact that most of them get on a plane do a talk and leave either the same day or leave the next. They either don't always want to take their laptop with them for short hops or even if they do, if they could leave the laptop in their hotel room and just take their slides with them they'd do it in a heartbeat.
I also know once the 'first guy' got one the rest will have to have one... Like laser pointers 15 or so years ago... Once one had it they all had to have em... It kinda happened (where I work) with the iPod but not everyone is as 'into music' while they ALL do these talks.
Oh well I'm sure many hate the idea but I still think it's a good one.

All these people who give talks with slide use PowerPoint to make them.
or make me make them for them.... Doctors, sheesh.
Anyway...
No way are they going to bother to learn some "process" in order to take their .ppt files and run them on a device, so the thing will need to be able to use native .ppt files.
Good luck with that one.
Also... how much money are you really willing to spend for a digital photo album?
Me? No more than $5.00.
Maybe not even that.

Yep I totally see your point on that one and I agree that would be a show stopper unless Apple could provide some type of PPT-->MOV converter. Hmm but doesn't PowerPoint for the Mac already do that? Hmmm I'm pretty sure it does (or did with Office on 9).
Edit..
Yea it does but I just tried it (in X) and it sucks... but I have to admit I didn't really try to tweak it too well.. Normal slides were 'okay' but any graphic that had text (on the graphic) was blurry as hell.

OK, there are photo albums you can buy in the store for likee 5-20 dollars for the cheap ones and $$ as you get bigger, fancier, and more pages...
Imagine a device that made that all obsolete because it carried ALL of your pictures and organized them into albums ala iPod playlists.. IMHO the $ saved on no photo albums wold be worth it

it sucks?! **** ..... I always tell people about that feature in Office and how they dont have to worry about the ppnt file b/c they can save it as a movie... <img src="graemlins/embarrassed.gif" border="0" alt="[Embarrassed]" /> oh well, i hope they didnt listen to me and just thought of me as a babbeling(sp?) idiot....
This "MediaPod" will be a level above the iPod, because it will have a decent sized LCD. Maybe a 3x4 inches sized screen. Something that Apple feels balances compactness with viewability. It will have FireWire and the 20GB Toshiba drive. It will have a simple navigation system that will let you easily pick (via text) what photo album you want to view (just like an iTunes playlist in the iPod).
The added bonus of this device is that it too will be able to act as a mounted hard drive, hold Contacts information AND allow you to view QuickTime movies.
Don't muddy the picture by giving it too many laptop or tablet capabilities.
Or what about this... Imagine a 4x3 LCD panel that would have a space to dock with the iPod in other words to 'pop-in-to' the back of it where this new panel would have outputs for audio/video.
Could the iPod as we have it now send audio/video (color) and power to the larger panel all via the connectors it alread has? I dunno and I kinda doubt it but THAT would be cool... That would make the 5Gb iPod kinda small if you were gonna have photos video and music on it but it would still be doable... The 10Gb would be better and a 20 would really be nice.
And this would really explain why the iPod has such a bad name. The iPod would really be a Pod that contained data that could inturn be inserted into a 4x3 color LCD panel for photo viewing or some form of camera and used to save photos or DV or some kind of touch tablet type device for ... well you get the idea.
I did it again and took things too far but getting back into the real world... I'd still buy an A/V iPodlike device.

An iPod with some of iPhoto's capabilites would be nice, imagine it downloading photos from a digital still camera. Plus also, an iPod with some of iMovie's capabilities would be nice, it downloading movies from a digital video camera.
Could it be that the iPod would be kind like Apple's own version of Minds@Work's Digital Wallet? Only that it doesn't just store data like the Digital Wallet, but it also showed those data on an external device (like an MP3 player and a camera)?
Here are some information about the Digital Wallet:
