not sure if the claim as to 2x storage space is correct, but i know the taiwan manufacturer is working on a much larger version of the same small (physical) size drive.

i wouldn't surprise me at all to see a 10 GB version of this player.

that being said, the competition is getting closer. my dad picked up the 20 GB jukebox retail the other day for $250. not as nice as the iPod, but 20GB? it also functions as an external drive, which is one of the main reasons he bought it.

5 Gigs isn't quite enough. i want to be able to put everything i want to listen to on at once. that could easily surpass 5 Gigs, but 10 is in the ballpark. with firewire, taking songs on and off isn't really a problem.

now all i need is a Mac.

But how big is it? The thing with the iPod is that it's so small.

Hey, JRC . In answer to your question about who has the money for 1000 songs, I have this to say: I do. That's cause I steal them. Welcome to the 21st, my friend.

Yes, but that's probably USB, right? A 20 GB USB hard drive is going to be useless. It would take hours and hours and hours to move 20 GB of data over USB.

The other thing is the ease of use of the iPod. The Nomads are a huge pain in the ass to acutally use compared to the iPod.

You are right though, a 10 GB version, even if it remains at $399, would be really nice. Really though, 5 GB is tons, and as you said moving music back and forth isn't really a concern with the FireWire.

mubot's right, who really needs to bring with them or move more than 5GB of music at a time anyway?

i don't think that anyone is really talking about the iPod's 5 gigs not being enough for music. i think that most people buying the iPod are really taken with storing files in an easy to transport manner.

the Jukebox, btw, is a lot bigger than the iPod. the interface sucks too, and it's USB. as of right now, Apple is the only company with a firewire connector. that's key for high speed file/music transfer.

the Nomad people are supposed to be coming out with one that has a firewire add-on, as well as a color LCD and the ability to play movie files, but it's basically vaporware at this point.

i think that Apple has made a great mp3 player, what they may or may not have taken into account is that a huge percentage of people using it want a mass storage device more. in that case you need to bump the HD size to somewhere between 7-10 Gigs, IMO.
