Internet Connection @ Apple Stores

I just got back a little while ago from the Tice's Corner Apple Store and on all of the G4s and TiBooks I was playing with whenever I went to any website from AI to the NY Mets website everything was so slow. What kind of connection do they have. I couldn't believe how slow even loading the Apple Store site was.

    That is weird. I was going to go there today from PA. I decided not to though. I haven't been to one yet. The Apple site may have been slow today I think.

    Yeah, but it wasn't just the Apple site that was slow.

    They have addresses from within the 17.x.x.x subnet, so whatever they are using isn't a plain vanilla connection like a DSL or cable modem.



    It seems unlikely they would pay for a T1 though. Has anybody tested upload speeds with Apple Store connections?

    don't the malls normally have a mainline that they lease to the stores that want it?

    The apple stores use AirPort so that could be why it was slow.

    Alpha Mac,I thought only the portables use AirPort. And I doubt it was that because the iBooks were fine speed-wise.

    a lot of people were probably on the internet on one DHCP connection, it might slow down <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    I have used aiport in the school district where I teach and it is ofetn VERY fast. The myth that AirPort is slow is just that...a myth.

    Airport would not be the problem. It transfers data at 11mbps. If I'm not mistaken, not even a T1 is that fast so Airport would cause the bottleneck.

    The portables are on AirPort and the desktops are attached to the network via ethernet cables. How can I be so certain? I am at the Northshore Mall Apple Store right now typing this in. I know it's sad that I read AppleInsider from the AppleStore. It's better than shopping with my girlfriend and her mother!!!!!



    DHCP has no bearing on speed. These machines grab an address in the morning when they're turned on and don't give it up untill the end of the day.



    The machines in this store are using 10.x.x.x addresses. From what I understand, the connection at this store is a fractional T-1 and is part of Apple's WAN. The circuit carries both the telephone and the Internet connectivity.

    Maybe not. They're definitely using UUNet to provide the connectivity. The DNS servers are also set to UUNet servers (198.6.1.2).



    As to the slowness of the Internet Connection at the store in Tice's corner, it could be that there was a problem upstream from the store. We've all seen that happen. Or, the line could've gone down and the store switched to an ISDN backup, or the circuit hadn't been delivered yet and they are using ISDN until it is up and running.



    If I remember correctly, ALL of the 17.x.x.x IP addresses belong to Apple. Yes, they have the whole 17.0.0.0/8 subnet.

    To be honest, what would have been nice if Apple connected all their stores w/ their company lines over ATM but that would be expensive =D

    The connection here at the Palisades store seems to be MUCH faster than Tice's Corner.
