What I can get for $3000 US?
There's a new in my other thread to explain why I suddenly have this budget

Basically I need to have at least a PC.....I am thinking about getting one Mac and one PC....I won't buy anything until January so now I have plenty of time to hear your opinions
Thanks
EDIT: The purchase MUST BE computer related.

those things are sweet
You can always build some cheap stripped down dual athlon linux boxes for a render farm later on.
Do you have a laptop?
Athlon XP 1900+ (or 2000 if its out by then)
chip set that supports DDR333 (can't think of the name right now....there is one)
512 MB DDR333
Lite-On IDE 32x12x40x CD-RW
DVD-RW (internal of course)
Cooler Master case
Sound Blaster Audigy platinum w/breakout box
Zip 250 MB
1.44" floppy drive
good cooling system
Radeon 8500DV
Sony 21" FD Trintron
Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound system
nice speakers
Mandrake 8.0
what else?
Yes, Leonis, get that one.

I am thinking about getting a dual Athlon. That thing will rock on 3D rendering
Congrats on the job Leonis. I'd get a Dual 800 w/o the superdrive. and an iPod
and virtual PC\t\t
Actually, I would wait until Jan 7th.
Go for a dual processor Athlon board (1.2GHz or whatever). Plug in 512mb of DDR and a fast Hard Drive. The Graphics card depends on your work style, but probably a Radeon 8500 will be fine (or DV as mentioned above).
Okay, that thing should cost about $1500 or so, without monitor. If you have a monitor, then fine. If not, I can recommend the LaCie Electron Blue range (sitting at one now).
Onto the Mac side .... I will assume you have $1000 left. Okay, I would get an iBook, so that you can work on the go. Hmmm, nice.
I wish I was you (although my iBook 600 DVD should be getting delivered today!!!!)
From Pricewatch:
Dual Athlon MP 1600s w/HSF: $340
Shuttle AK31 3.1: $80
Inwin Q500: $80
256MB PC2100: $50
Radeon VE: $50
Ethernet Card: $25
20GB 7200RPM: $100
52X CD: $20
$750, add some $250 monitor to get a speedy system for just shy of a grand.
Or forget useful work and buy a nice gaming machine.
CoolerMaster ATC 101
XP1900+
2 256MB PC2100
Shuttle AK31
Nice heatsink (PARC?)
A few Delta Fans
Radeon 8500DV
GF3 TI500
Dual Sony Widescreen 24" Trinitrons
A few 15000RPM SCSI drives on a RAID
A good RAID controller
A good SCSI controller
Ethernet card
SB Audigy Platinum
Rheobus
32X CDRW
16X DVD
DVD R
Floppy Drive (just for fun)
It may run a little over the price limit though.
