In its annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Apple revealed that its research and development (R&D) expenditures increased 13 per cent or $50 million to $430 million in 2001 as compared to 2000. R&D spend totalled $430 million, $380 million, and $314 million in 2001, 2000, and 1999, respectively.

According to Apple, this overall increase in R&D spending over the last two years is directly related to increases in R&D headcount of approximately 25 per cent over that time to support expanded product development efforts.

I'm impressed that Apple spends that kind of money on R&D in the first place. It's a hell of a lot of money for a company with only $6 billion in sales.

    [vader] impressive [/vader]

Let's hope that extra $50 million is for swank new CPU & mobo development teams.

Yeah, maybe they should buy ATI; the company that can write the drivers for the ATI cards.

Let's just hope they put this extra spending to good use. We all know the R&D they spent to get those iMac patterns was a flat out waste.

I agree. However Apple does have a pretty big war chest for a company with their revenue stream. They also have relatively a lot of talent and intellectual property compared to most of their peers (hardware co's).

If they use(d) these resources wisely they could really accomplish something.

Personally and as an investor I'm very glad that they are spending more on R&D, even if profits suffer in the short term as a result. The iPod is hopefully the tip of the iceberg.
