Why isn't there Mac PVR from Apple?
A PVR like a TiVo is just a harddrive and software that keeps track of shows to record. Why isn't this a free iApp from Apple. We need video in and out (easy to do), a harddrive (got it), and good software to manage it (Apple is king of this sort of software design). So why don't we have it? Formac is going to ship a $1000 external 48GB firewire drive with video in and out and PVR software, but that seems so completely redundant. All I need are the video ports and the software. I've got a huge harddrive. Does anyone have any insight on this issue that I am missing? This isn't a Pippin or some other non-mac device that might not sell well. This is just making my Mac *do* more with what is already esaily available. This *is* digital hub.

ps. i have a tivo and it rocks.
I thought it would be a good idea if Apple created a PVR box equipped with an Airport card, so you could connect to it from any other Mac in the house wirelessly and simply download shows to your Mac. Not very realistic I know, but it would be cool.

I believe that similar technology has been shown to work, though going the other way, from one computer to another, streaming video over AirPort wireless network then to a TV via FireWire.

Well if MPEG4 is as good at low bitrates as they claim and perhaps Apple moves to 54mb Wireless then this is a possibility.
I like the idea of an Apple-branded TiVo machine.
Two 120 GB hard disks and an efficient OS. Don't bother with all the hustle and bustle of OS X.
It's fast enough to encode TV-quality video to MPEG-4 in real time.
If you want to put MPEG4 files onto your imac, just plug a FireWire 2 cable into both machines. there's a new form of FW hard drive -you don't have to power down the slave machine!
Just don't delete the file you're transferring while you're copying it.

Ugh. Getting sick of hearing that comment. Explain all the kids spending the beautiful summer months indoors playing unreal then.
