Apple sells 125,000 iPods. Is that good?

According to the Time Canada article Apple will sell $50,000,000 worth of iPods. Divide by $400 and that 125,000 units. Jobs says people are buying Macs just to use the iPod. Is 125,000 units a lot in one quarter? Considering it costs a lot it is certainly not a flop as it could have been. Lower it to $299 and they'ed be selling twice as many, or a million a year. The margins on iPod must by good so this might be like selling 50,000 more iMacs.

    Apple doesn't get $400 each for them unless they sell them ALL through the Apple store. Presumably they sell some through Fry's, CompUSA, etc.

    That is a good point, although if XPlay works well.... that would mean more people buying it an not getting a amc. if it was garunteed to be mac only, then it would be a good idea. but it is easily ported, so no SIGNIFIGaNT price drop... (sorry for the typos)

    Good point Sizzle Chest. This brings up an interesting point. To tell how well Apple did in a quarter, you used to look at units sold. Profits mattered to but you could have good profits from PowerMacs but still modest units sold. Now we have to factor in periprherals, too.

    apple can't be making much more than their usual 20-25 percent margin on the iPod.

    the drive costs to much and they certainly didn't cut corners on anything else

    Apple Store accounts for roughly 50% of Apple's rev. So that turns out to some 145833 ( ) sold iPods this Q.

    $25.000.000 / 400 (through apple store)

    $25.000.000 / 300 (through partners and retail chain)

    I think 300 is probably a low figure though. Could be up to 330 I think.

    You guys didn't read the Time article, eh?

    Nah. When you quote aggregate sales numbers, you just use the max retail price, so the number ($5000000) looks bigger.

    500000 = 5 Million

    50000000 = 50 Million

    If 125,000 units were sold, that's what percentage of Firewire Macs? I've heard the number 25,000,000 Mac users thrown around, but not all of those machines are really in the iPod market (schools, pre-firewire, etc.) Are there maybe 5,000,000 new school macs out there? If so, 125,000 is a large percentage.

    It's pretty good, but the news is better than you think: iPod debuted in stores on what, Nov. 10? From then to the end of the year is 50 days(not counting xmas).

    125,000 in 50 days amounts to 228,000/quarter, or close to 1,000,000 units per year.

    The Cube had pretty good sales the first quarter and then went down rapidly. I'm not saying that's likely with iPod, but the people who absolutely had to have have bought it. I really think 2002 will be the year Apple grows some marketshare. Even if it just takes them up to 5% worldwide, I think we'll see growth.

    The Cube sold about 125,000 units its first quarter. (the Christmas quarter no less)

    I'd wait until the second quarter's results are in before making judgements.
