I tripled my TIVO storage capacity last night!

Last night I took my Tivo over my buddy's place and he installed a new 40 GB drive to compliment the existing 20 GB drive that was pre-installed.

He had to format the drive using a special Tivo/Linux image he downloaded. Then we just popped the drive in and tied it down.

I don't know how many Tivo users are in AI, but this upgrade is a must. The new drive only costed $86 at Staples. Good deal.

That's great! What would be more useful though would be a link to instructions on how this can be done.

The Linux hackers have been doing this for years.

    what about a bigger drive? say 120GB? <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

Also, if I took the drive out, and put it in a F/W enclosure, could my iMac "see" the TV files?!!

    Sure.

Didn't Tivo (down)upgrade the software so you have to buy the service? I read about that at slashdot I think.

Just wondering if there is a way to change the compression that TIVO uses? I'd rather have less compression and fewer hours to record. Do all TIVO recorders use similar compression or are some better than others?

I've got a Dish receiver with 40hr/TIVO recorder. It's cool but the artifacts are pretty bad on play back.
