Apple telemarketing...?

So I answer the phone a few minutes ago and a woman's voice comes on.

"Hello, can I speak to <my name>?"

"That's me..."

"I'm calling on behalf of Apple Computers. It seems you've expressed an interest in the new iMac, and..."

"Yes, as a matter of fact, I have one on order."

"Well! That's exactly what I was calling about. Did you have any questions or concerns?"

"Well, I was wondering when it might ship, but you probably don't know anything about that <rakish grin>."

So she gave me a telephone number to call about my shipping status, plus an extension. The number is the same as they give you at the Apple Store to call about your order status (1-800-676-2775), but the extension puzzles me. Maybe I have a direct line to someone who knows something. That would be cool.

Anyway, it seemed a lot to me like she was trying to sell people iMacs over the phone. Things like 'calling on the behalf of' made me think of an outside telemarketing firm rather than Apple. Has anyone else received a call like this?

Well, I tried the extension just now. When I asked he said he was accessing 'resources' which would allow him to estimate my ship date (the other times I called they said they honestly couldn't tell me). But he said it was still too early in the ship process, so he didn't know anything besides that it would probably be 3-5 weeks from my order date, so best-case scenario would be next week and worst case would be March 1st (shudder).

Telemarketing... guess that's what I get for ordering online

AFAIK, you will only receive these calls if you've clicked Save For Later on the Apple Store. I have never received one of these calls.
