Am I alone on this, first the new iMac and now the eMac booth have Apple logos that are way out of scale. Apple has always had impecable taste, but these last two issues are very disapointing. Did they loose their Industrial Designer?
Jonathian Ive is just as "loose" as he always was.
The iMac logo looks like it's the same relative size as the PowerMac's or Cube's, maybe smaller. I'd bet the old iMacs have about the same size logo on their top. I think the displays have fairly tiny Apple logos, but most other products seem to have logos that cover about the same area relative to the surfaces they occupy. (Does any of that make sense?) In other words, I see no real difference in the scale of the logos myself.
^^^ would have been sufficient.

Then it must just be me. The silver logos on both the eMac and new iMac look way to large for where they are placed. In addition, the material that they chose for the base of the new iMac looks yellow and old after a month or so. My feeling is that it is destined to be the next "cube' unless they attach a decent sized screen to it.
no one is saying that ives and apple have totally lost it.
what is being (correctly in my opinion) pointed out are some flaws in what we see as (otherwise) marvelous products from this great company.
i would add to the list the difference in colours of the white plastic used on the iMac base: the matte base itself i find pleasing. but the slightly different colour of white for the cd tray is VERY ugly. even the new store models look as if they are very old and have that tell-tale grey look around the edges of the tray.
in a further note: i own 2 cubes: never was bothered about the so-called cracks (they are just flow lines, anyway). so, perfection is in the mind of the beholder. some care about these things, some do not. others care about other things.
go apple! and make us a beautiful pda that has a phone built into it.

Sorry, this ad just stuck me funny, I really belly laughed, I guess I'm just getting more easily amused in my old age.
if they made imacs in colors, they would also have to be somewhat translucent. i'm sure it would be stunning though. all of apple's products are extremely white and gray right now. i thought beige/white was unhip.
While I agree some of Apple's logo sizing is a bit on the large size, I think it's a matter of branding.
Years back during the IIci, and PowerMac 8500 days, the logo was this tiny multi-coloured logo which while cool, couldn't be seen from across the room.
Even the Powerbooks had small logos.
Then Apple lost it when it came out with the G3 blue and whites and the Powerbooks with the big white logo on the back and upside down.
They've since scaled back a bit with the chrome logos on white, which don't stick out like a sore thumb. Although the one on the iMac could be a tad smaller.
But I don't have a problem with the industrial design...it rocks.

Hehe. Do you smoke then? The iMacs I have seen that are even over 4-5 months old still look very very new.... Also, on the logo side, I don't see anyone complaining about the Powerbook.. And I am not 'cuz it fits perfectly. On the new iMac, I think it is pretty good, but on the eMac I agree that the logo just looks a bit weird. Overall, I love the stuff coming out of good old Cupertino. (Well, the aesthetics anyways lol)

Just for the sake of accuracy, it must be pointed out that the "IIci and PowerMac 8500" were separated by many, many years. Let no one think they were contemporary.
The logo you refer to is the classic Apple multi-color logo. It was indeed very small on the machines that sported it. Jobs stated that standard variety logo was out of date and belonged to a different era; it was phased out early in the Second Reign of Jobs.
Just make it black, and everythang be everythang. Black with a cool silver blue logo. The chrome logo looks like ass....................................
iMac plastics need a revamping. I'd be happy to see the imac dome adopt the plastic type of the emac.
What I really want is indigo and grahite imacs

where would you put the colors? On the whole base? I think that'd look pretty bad. The thing I liked about the CRT iMacs was that they only had the color on the sides and back (plus a little on the CD/DVD drive and speakers). Otherwise the front was ice. The whole thing colored would look stupid.

you gotta see a mock up before you say it would look stupid.

You know, the bigger the towers, the bigger the logo. The latter scales too well.

Just nothing.
Maybe admins should terminate this thread? Or Apple legals will terminate their design squad?

the 14" iBooks and the matte finish on the iMac dome stand out IMO.

but, in any case, What happened to Apple's taste? Well, er um it might have something to do with corn in a can, or says Dave Haxton.

Didn't the G3 AIOs have huge Apple logos (admittedly not distinctively colored)?

It wasn't that big, but it was bigger then the iMac's logo.

it wouldn't if done correctly
