macbook pro retina screen fault

Hi,

One fine morning the display of my macbook pro retina 15 inch went crazy. There is no physical damage to the screen. Apple is refusing apple care. The guy at the istore where I went told me that I must have done "something wrong". Here are the photos of the screen:

If you boot the machine up in safe mode by holding the shift key, do you get the same effect?

Yes, have had a harrowing experience with applecare. They say that an "extremely small material was caught between the screen and the keyboard and that has damaged the internal display". When I checked online, many people have a similar problem, dust scratch. The power house screen can get damaged by dust and similar particles. In my case apple calls it 'accidental damage' and asks for more than 500 pounds. Have emailed everyone including the CEO. No use. The genius bar did not even mail me a copy of my 'fault report'. I wish I knew about the flimsiness of the screen before I bought it

A few people mention scratches here:

but nothing like what you have, half your display is broken. Are those scratches all the way down the left side of the display? Could a pet have jumped on it when you weren't looking or do you carry it in a rucksack or something? That sort of thing wouldn't happen just by having it closed on a desk, there's a rubber strip round the display.

There's no way they can tell it's not accidental damage. If you have home insurance, you can claim the repair on that or there are slightly cheaper 3rd party services:

Well, no pet jumped [I dont have one] and I use the mac only for editing and I treat it as if it is Jesus Christ's father. I have paid through my nose for it and is extremely careful. I do feel this is a dust scratch problem. The screen looks like that only when it is turned on. You can zoom in on the picture when it is powered off. There is hardly any visible scratch. When I present the screen to mac employees first before turning on, they agree that the screen looks fine. Then they go inside, speaks to the manager, and comes back with mumbo jumbo. There should be an independent inquiry into the durability of retina screens. Also, the data of the number of people who approach applecare with retina screen problems should be publicized.

I have the exact problem at the moment.
Like you, i also treat my laptop like JC's father. However the apple service provider in my country refuses to fix it under warranty as they insist it was damaged by me,even without them even taking any sort of look at the laptop.

I used my laptop, closed it and took a nap. When i woke up, i found it to be in a similar condition as yours. I called apple customer service and they instructed me in doing the necessary safe starts and such and they determined it was a hardware issue most likely of the logic card or graphic card. Its gotten worse within the period of two days, even though im not using it.

Apple customer care insists that its an issue that should be under warranty but they cannot force my service provider to adhere to it as i am outside of the US.

Ive attached photos, of what i initially saw, how its progressed and also my screen showing no aesthetic damage or sign on foul play. Im not sure what options i have, i cannot afford to replace a screen at this time.

    Can someone advise me.

The people on the phone won't be able to see the crack in the display. If a small piece of grit landed in the speaker grill, closing the display on it would crack the screen. Someone has done it with the magsafe where it came out and they shut the lid on it. With a display breakage, an external display would still work ok. You can buy a Dell display or other cheap display and connect it with a mini-displayport to displayport adaptor or cable.

That would allow you to use it until you can repair it. You should get accidental damage insurance to cover for these kind of things.

I'm having the exact same issue, and I went online when it first happened and found hundreds of others with this issue. Apple refuses to fix them, don't know what to do, but I will not ever purchase an Apple product again. Nothing was done with a force reasonable enough to crack my screen if it was manufactured to a reasonable standard of durability. Something needs to be done about this.

I had the same issue and paid an extra $300 for insurance through Apple, they still wont cover it.
