Every time I try to rebuild the office database, my mac crashes

So there is an apparent problem with my Mac and Microsoft software.  For the past week, I have gotten the error message to rebuild my database.  I can click cancel or rebuild.  If I click cancel, the message pops up again in 10 seconds.  If I click rebuild, my Mac shuts down.  I have taken my laptop to Geek Squad and to the Apple store.  The apple store advised me that I may have to submit the database folder to Microsoft (a 20 gig folder) and they would repair it and send it back to me.  I don't see anywhere on the Internet to try this.

Has anyone on the forums run into this problem?  I have a Time Machine and I have done a restore from weeks back and yet this problem is still occurring.  I can't wipe the laptop and start anew because I need the files, documents, etc. that are on the laptop.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Is this Outlook or the older Entourage program?
