Text Messages switch from blue to green

Why does the messages switch from blue to green while messaging another iPhone? When they are blue it says delivered, when it's green it says sent as text. It is the same number, in a continuous conversation. He has an iPhone 5 (maybe 5s) , I have a 4s. What does this mean?

    Green means the message couldn't be sent via a data network and was sent as a standard text message. If cellular data and wifi are off on one device, it would go out as a text.
