Double Click doesn't work
On my MBP w/Snow Leopard, double click wouldn’t open a desktop file or any file, but does work in the Dock. I had to use a right click to open a menu, then click on ‘Open’. System Preference Mouse didn’t help.
I upgraded to Yosemite thinking double click would work. NO joy. Same problem. System Preference Mouse doesn’t help here either. I began using a Magic Mouse thinking that would work. No luck. Double click just doesn’t work.
Googling the problem didn’t come up with an answer.
Double Click works on my iMac w/ Yosemite.
Does anyone have a suggestion to open files with ‘Double Click’?

Such odd problems you have.
Did you clean install Yosemite? I'd suggest backing up and clean installing. If it works on the clean install, manually port your stuff over. It'll be a pain, but at least whatever broken low-level files that plague you now won't come along.

I'll try a clean install, but the problem existed before the Yosemite upgrade, so I don't have high hopes for a clean install to work any better.
However, using a wireless keyboard and mouse rectified several problems that must have stemmed from the MBP keyboard and/or trackpad. For example, an overwrite of letters whenever I corrected text, plus a frequent beachball. So your thought of it being a hardware problem is more plausible.
Otherwise, I'm quite satisfied with Yosemite. No major issues even with this old MBP that I thought I might have going directly from SL to Yosemite without installing Lion, ML, and Mavericks first. My only disappointment was losing Quicken and Graphic Converter - and, of course, it didn't resolve the Double Click problem.
Installing Yosemite (not clean) on my late 2009 iMac had none of the problems I experienced upgrading (clean) to Mavericks. Yosemite seems to be more stable. Hopefully, saying that doesn't jinx it and cause it to come back to bite me in the a__.

I have the same problem with the double click. I find Yosemite to be very erratic... Double click doesn't work on my home-Mac Mini trackpad, but does on my work-MBP. Three random keys on my home (Apple!) keyboard don't work (granted, could be another problem, but didn't show up until exactly the moment I updated to Yosemite). At my work-MBP, the laptop keyboard works perfectly, but the external (also Apple!) keyboard only types gibberish (Which, again, could be caused by another reason, but, again, appeared only exactly at the moment I updated to Yosemite).
Hope this will get fixed soon, because it's a nuisance (Apart from the fact that UIF of Yosemite is *horrible*. But then again, I didn't have to update).
UI wise Yosemite has a quite a few options to customise it, simple and effective.
Turn on dark mode and/or disable transparency in accessibility settings. It's the translucency but it's called transparency in system prefs. I use both as I have a sensitivity to translucency in OS X at least and it give me headaches from the get go. Dark mode minimised the all whiteness and is just great and I love it.
Give it some time, yosemite is very well don UI wise, you can really see Jony Ive's light touch and attention to detail. Soon mavericks will seem stale. Even iTunes that people whine about, is very well done indeed and streamlined, sidebar icons (not just in iTunes but everywhere) are big and clear.
If you still do have issues with say the folder colours, you can always customise these. You can even render the dock without the white background with a terminal command, if you don't want dark mode. You can even get lucinda grande back on your menu with a hack too. But like I said, it's really well done, give it some time. There's a reason Ive is a lead designer of apple, and we are not, you are not going to get some choices until you give them time.
In terms of bluetooth input devices, find them in bluetooth settings, delete them, take the batteries out, fully charge them, put them back in turn them on, re-assign them to the mac.
All the best.

A clean install should easily fix the problem. It did back when I tried
I had the same problem, and it was driving me crazy.
Just found my issue :-)
plug in a regular mouse and reduce the double clic speed.
phew, hope it works for you guys

Thanks for the insight. It was driving me crazy. Don't have an external mouse. but at least i know now that clicking it vigorously will get the work done for the time being.
Thank you, works beautifully!
