An open letter to CVS/RiteAid on CurrentC vs. Apple Pay

Dear CVS & RiteAid,

Recently you announced that you have chosen to opt out of accepting the Apple Pay system in favor of your CurrentC system. Those of us who pay attention noticed that the main complaint you have with the Apple Pay system is that it does not automatically allow you to harvest all of the information you currently get only when we use our "discount" card.

We also noticed that there is no technical reason you could not accept the Apple Pay system AND implement your CurrentC program much like you are able to accept Visa AND American Express AND MasterCard, AND Discover.

You might want to consider that there is a significant amount of liability attached to storing consumer data and that consumers are getting tired of finding out that shoddy data security has resulted in their information being compromised. This should be especially salient to you given that you provide prescription drugs and have in your hand people's potentially delicate medical information.

Please take a moment to study and learn from the recent breaches this year at Target, Home Depot, Staples, NeedMyTranscript, Sourcebooks, Penn Highlands Brockville Hospital, KMart, JimmyJohns, Goodwill, Nieman Marcus, Michaels, White Lodging, Dairy Queen, Municipal Bond Insurance Association, Cox Communications, P.F. Chang's, California DMV, Sally Beauty, NoMoreRack, and Experian for some examples before you put the laziness of your marketing department ahead of the privacy of your customers.
