I have an old macbook - early 2008 - it still works very well and is quite capable of many things. Is there any way to get Yosenety running on this thing and short of that, do standard Linux distros work on Apple intel hardware? Im sure that a Cent 7 desktop install will extend the life of this bad boy if it cant get a new OSX.

Don't know about Yosemite, but I suggest you put an SSD in place of the hard drive. That will dramatically improve its performance. I did this with an old Core 2 Duo/GMA950 Mac Mini and it is now a great machine.
