Can I prevent iTunes from doing this?

I have an iPod Classic, set as a mass storage device, which I manage manually on two different PCs. If I purchase say two songs from one artist, but separately from my two different computers, it shows up on my iPod as two separate artist entries with the same name. Is there a way to eliminate the two entries, as it's annoying if I want to play all the songs at once because the iPod will stop when the songs from one Artist entry are finished. Also, is there a way to prevent this from happening every time I happen to purchase more than one song from a given artist, from both computers at different times?

Check if the names are exact in iTunes. Sometimes there's a leading or trailing space in the name.
