Difference between the G's

What's the actual, real world difference between the clock speeds of the various G's?

For instance, how much faster was a 300mhz G3 than, say, a 300Mhz 9600 PPC. or a 400Mhz G4 than a G3? <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

The G3 handily spanked the G2 (i.e. 603 and 604) PPC chips in per-MHz operations-- the 233 and 266 G3s superseded the 300 mhz 604e's and were much faster...

The G4 is just about equal to the G3 per MHz, that is, without the consideration of Altivec- when it comes into play, the G4 handily spanks the G3 (and just about any other chip on the market, PPC or x86) in per-MHz performance.

Altivec is why the G4 is able to run neck and neck with much higher clocked x86 processors in certain tasks (i.e. Photoshop)...
