As far as I know Sometimes your network will unlock the phone for free, especially if the phone is no longer in its initial contract period. However if you haven't finished paying for the phone on your initial contract then the provider may not give you an unlock code when you move to a different provider. In which case you can attempt to unlock the phone yourself, but this may not be as cheap or easy as you'd like. I noted a tab about http://tcawireless.com/ where you can get the services such as unlocking, jailbreaking iphones but never used this. Has anyone used this before?. Let me know if you find other good options for jailbreaking or unlocking iphone.Looking for more ideas, please share if anyone finds more options or ideas.

You need to find out what carrier the phone is sim-locked to. There are online checks that use the IMEI e.g:
http://iphoneimei.info
That IMEI is in settings:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4061
Once you know the sim-lock carrier, you either pay the carrier or a 3rd party to unlock the phone to allow you to use other carriers.
ATT unlocks (out-of-contract) iPhones for free.
I've done it with several before I gave them away ... worked great.
