[quote] Now Bluetooth further strengthens the Mac?s already dominant position in the wireless space. You might say we?re living up to our reputation for being first to market with innovative technology you can actually use.

    From Apple's Bluetooth page.

Hate to break it to them, but Sony has had Bluetooth in many of their laptops for at least the last 6 months <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Emphasis should be on you can actually use.

Apple's implementation will undoubtedly be easier to configure/use than any other solution out there.

dont remind me!!!! they made this bluetooth announcement the day after i chose not to buy a bluetooth-compatible printer in favor of a cheaper non-bluetooth one, saying to myself, "i'll never be able to use this technology on my mac anyway..."

    famous last words.

(and i cant return my printer now either. )

I wouldn't beat myself up over it. Bluetooth is painfully slow for any bandwidth intensive tasks. You wanted to print some pictures right? Can you imagine how long it would take? USB is much better. Personally I'd rather see more firewire printers and scanners before I see bluetooth versions.

Well, if bluetooth is that important to you, why not take the printer back and exchange it for the more expensive one. Most stores are usually willing to exchange something if you are intending on spending even more money in their store. And considering you've only had your new printer for a day, i don't think there should be much problem. Or did you buy online? If so its a little more painful to return things.

matsu's probably right. anyway, i did buy onine but even if i return it, all the stores here are now charging restocking fees of 15%. im not paying them $30 just to exchange it and another $100 for the bluetooth printer.

i've never seen a firewire printer or scanner. is there such a thing? i have two empty firwire ports just doing nothing, maybe they can be put to good use one day.

You will only find, at least from what I have seen, Firewire on highend (data intensive) scanners and printers that have to push a LOT of data

Why isn´t there more Ethernet printers and scanners? What does it take more than a ethernet card?

Mac's girl: There are adapters that plug into the parallel or USB ports on your printer, just like the D-Link adapter that Apple is selling for the computer side.

I think Mr AJ just mentioned at least one mid range firewire scanner. I haven't seen any printers, though. Wonder why there aren't more Firewire scanners out there in the mid and entry level. How much more could a firewire port cost? When I think that even a fast USB scanner is pretty slow at anything above 300dpi (most aren't even that great at 150), I wonder why manufacturers keep upping the dpi and color resolution? If you want to do the occasional enlargement, or high res scan it takes ages over USB.

My fear is that since a lot of PC's use USB or SCSI, we'll probably see USB 2.0 supplant both as scanner manufacturers finally start modernizing their interfaces. Where does that leave macs? The odd firewire scanner or otherwise we;ll have to use a USB 2.0 device but at 1.1 speeds. Not good. Not bad if you ave a tower, but what about the millios of iMac and iBook users?
