AI PROJECT::Apple Daily Newspaper

Posted:
in General Discussion edited January 2014
What about if there was a daily PDF newspaper that had all the macintosh and apple and technology related stories from the day, and maybe a comic or two? Is there something already like this? I know about As the Apple Turns, but that has only three stories. Maybe it would have a list of updates from VersionTracker and a page about rumors and tipis. It would sorta be like MacWorld or MacAddict Daily, from one source that you would print out!

Eh?

EDITS: More ideas:

What would be great would if there was a script that could insert stories with SSI's..... Write the stories, and then just make a layout and insert links? and then if people were to search they would only get that story and not the whole newspaper for that day

It would be a good newspaper layout, hopefully you could write the story like this::::

Headline: asdfasfasdf

Writer:asdfasdfasdfasdf

Story:sasdfasdfa

It would be a newspaper layout with SSI scripts to render it

So it would be a MacSurfer type page, only a PDF?

    Ehhhh... no.

I don't think you're going to find any volunteers here. I don't really see the point of it. What would it be? A conglomeration of all the day's articles from the various Mac web sites?

If you want to do it yourself, go for it.

It might be alright as long as the content was good. But not a daily, weekly would be better. It would also be less work for who ever was writting it.

Well, i think if we got enough people, they could all be assigned to different things.

    OR

yes, it would be weekly, yet, I would want something more weekly. Making the website would be easy if we could generate the right scripts. You would have the story, headline, writer, the date, and the priority and the server would draw it all up. And, if the story took up too much space, there would be a link to a place further down the page.

Now, this would only be if it were HTML. Otherwise, we would have someone who would make it , or if we found some AppleScript Guru, have an applescript

and yes, the content would be good

Editorials, Letters to the Editor, Tips, Reviews, Comics, anything imaginable

It would be like a magazine but free and better. Someone would offer to do the review, they would do it, send it in, it gets edited, it is up in the next issue.

In hopes to keep it short, sometimes too much strain on the eyes, it would be hopefully run every two-days.

It would sorta be like As the Apple turns but more serious and it would contain more. No disrespect to ATAT <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Here is my sketch of the paper, guys.

In addition to news, perhaps some of you could write opinion collumns about OSX, hardware, or just Apple in general.

Anyone can post a mock-up, but the $64,000 question is: where is the content coming from? Who are you going to get to write articles for you every day/week?

Besides who will write content (good question!), there is another problem. You talk about using stories off the web, but I think you might run into some copyright violations there. You can't just repackage other people's content without some problems. I don't want to rain on the parade, but I don't think this is very feasible.

I have to agree. You'd just about have to have a serious, full-tilt writer or writing staff, with connections, access, inside knowledge, etc.

I don't know of a way of taking stuff from Maccentral.com and other Mac news sites and simply omitting the writers byline and changing a couple of words and not be nailed for some sort of infringement.

At the very least, it's kinda unethical.

Now, if a deal could somehow be struck, fine.

I just don't know if there's enough different to warrant the time, attention and labor. So many Mac sites on the web, both good and bad, serious and lighthearted.

Most people (okay, me...) like to pop in, scan what interests them (I could care less about today's Filemaker Pro story at MacCentral.com), read it quickly and move on.

I get Macworld and Mac Design, and occasionally buy others if an article or feature is of interest to me.

I think the only way something like your idea could "make it", would be to narrow in and focus on a very specific topic or aspect of Macs or Apple.

It's always been my opinion that there's a HUGE market of non-Mac-savvy newbies or PC converts out there and if I were to ever embark on a project like this?instead of trying to be all things to everyone (and have to deal with smart-ass, know-it-all high-end users who live for ripping you up and nitpicking every sentence you write?I'd make it something "iOriented", focus on the iMac and iBook, the iApps, home users/consumers/soccer mom/grandparents, etc.

In other words, wide-eyed newbies who don't know all the lingo, what iTunes is, just coming to the platform, etc.

I truly do believe there is a market for something like that. All those first-time, non-geek Mac buyers/users out there, just waiting for someone to explain what all those ports are on the side of their iBook, things like resolution, what Firewire is, how to use iMovie, what you can do with a Mac, etc.

It's a nice thought and a newspaper layout is a good idea for PRINT news (though not really online)(btw good mockup Matt), but there are really enough Mac news sites out there already.. in regular, easy-to-read, non-PDF web format... from professional news people and writers, experts in their field. And there are a lot of amateurs trying to do Mac news, far too many. Even if this paper were 100% original, whether it's daily, weekly, or possibly if it's monthly, it's more than likely going to be a stinker if it comes from the barely endowed writers from a forum like AppleInsider. No offense, I'm no better than the rest of us at being a serious journalist. Still, a cute idea.

    Were we just insulted?

"Barely endowed writers"? My pencil is a good 7 inches...PLUS the eraser! But it does have some teeth marks on it because...never mind.

Hopefully the content would come from the source. Many of what the other news sites gets is from the internet or Apple Press releases. Of course sometimes lines such as "As reported first by MacMacMac, Blah did this to Blah while Blah was watching the whole time!" would be inserted if need be.

I think we all spend enough time on the internet to make something like this every two or three days
