How best to xfer files from PC to iBook via internet?

1) Does anyone have an easy way to archive a lot of files on an IBM so that they can be de-archived again in OS X (or even OS 9)? I've tried PKZip for IBM and the one ZIP util I've found for the Mac OS, but I haven't been able to de-archive them successfully.

2) Also, can anyone suggest a temporary resting place for a gig or so of files for download on the iBook? I'm disappointed that iTools is not IBM-compatible.

3) With no CD burner on my IBM and no floppy drive on the iBook I can't do much of anything right now without using the internet as the intermediary. Any general suggestions there?

I'm hearing impending-death noises in the hard drive on my IBM as I type this, and I fear to lose a whole lot of important stuff. (I'm a backup-phobic idiot-fool.)

Thanks for anything.

- PEte

Might try stuffit for your archiving. I know its pretty standard on the mac side of things, and there is a windows version available for download.

Are you using a network? I just found out how to transfer from a PC to my new Mac. Check this link out how to do it...

    Ah-ha!

I told you guys people still refer to Windows as "IBM - compatible".

Sorry, Pete, don't mean to use you as an example, but a while back here I mentioned that many people call Windows machine's IBM compatibles and they told me that the term went out with the 5.25" floppy. Which it did. But I still know people who erringly use the term. (Eugene, you reading this? )

told ya so, told ya so.

Oh, and no, I'm afraid I don't know of any place to transfer a gig of files to on the internet. However, iTools is Windows compatible.

You'd be well served to get a smallish inexpensive portabe firewire CD-burner and a cheapo firewire card for the PC - considering the time you'd be saving.

Otherwise, just load <a href="http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html"; target="_blank">Dave</a> on the iBook and plug it directly into the PC with a crossover cable. Much quicker.

That, or a USB Zip drive - assuming the PC has USB. Otherwise you're back to needing a card for the PC again.

Why use Dave when you can use OS X's SAMBA support? CHP, you are using OS X, right? If not, you should.
