Is this TOO MUCH information [below]?
Hello fellow Mac users,
This is my first foray into Apple Forums, after using Macs for many years…funny I've never dropped in before now!
I don't know yet how much information users want to see with a question. So I used this nifty little app called EtreCheck, which produced the exhaustive system information of my setup. Overkill? Please be frank, you can't hurt my feelings. I want to be as popular as I can here.
ANYWAY……..
PROBLEM DESCRI[PTION :
I RUN OX10 MAVERICKS on my mid-2011 iMac. (But I have noticed this issue with other Apple Macs I’ve owned in the past.
THE PROBLEM: Practically no application will really “Close” or “Quit” when I click on those commands in the app menu ( or when I use use alt/command/esc key combo command; and frequently when I right-click active app icon in dock to "Force Close" ). Even if I sit and wait a while, programs won’t “Quit.”
And most of the time _even when a program says it has quit_….I look in the “Force Quit Applications” menu box and…..the damn things are still shown running. Safari and iTunes are the worst offenders of these ”sticky” quits, as both of those two will usually “stick around” to make me try “Force Quit” several times.
Why won’t applications simply quit when requested? Very annoying.
I am aware of more Unix-type commands to close apps. But that's not the point. The point is: Shouldn't "QUIT" mean "QUIT"?

You have loads of anti-virus apps and all sorts of 3rd party tools that could be interfering with the quit command. RestoreMeNot could be what's causing the problem but you'd have to go through each of the utilities.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/40013/restoremenot
LaunchMagic is another one to look at:
http://www.chronosnet.com/Products/launchmagic/releasenotes.html
"Version 3.0.3
Fixed rare problem that could prevent software from quitting"
I don't know if that refers to the LaunchMagic software or the apps though.
Hi Marviin,
I've always been under the impression from other users that RestoreMeNot is a tool to specifically address the annoyance of web browsers that insist on always re-openinig the last session. And it does that. I don't think it is the problem, because there have been long periods of time during which I have run my Mac without RestoreMeNot, but with this same issue of sticky apps refusing to close !
Ditto with Launch Magic. Actually, I don't know why I even have LM installed - I virtually never use it! DOH! Again, though, there have been periods when I've not had LM installed, but still have had sticky apps.
Just to satisfy our mutual curiosity, I'll uninstall both of the apps we've discussed here and run for a while, to see what happens.
Re: lots of anti-virus code: I would never run any machine without Kaspersky - in my opinion the world's best AV app. It's comprehensive, big, but not buggy (like our dear old dork Norton! ). Kaspersky has never interfered even slightly with my normal operation of the machine, so light on resources is it. AND - "Believe-it or Not" ( Apple techs DON'T believe it. They say I've set a couple incredible precedents!) - over my many years of running Macs, Kaspersky has actually caught TWO viruses! So much for virus-free OS X!! That's a dangerous myth. So what I'm saying here is, "Nobody better try to get between me and my Kaspersky.
Here's what I'll do: I'll dump LM and RMN and run for a while, then get back to you. I have to admit I am approaching this experiment with a bias - these sticky apps have been bugging me for so long, it seems to me to be an Apple-specific issue. (Or, Not?)
Thanx for your input. Later…
Will T.
