You're making some big assumptions there, and Apple has said nothing to support your line of thinking...which is what many people in this thread have been asking for.
Will Apple really keep the internals of future generation watches in a compatible form factor? They haven't done it for the phones or tablets, except for a pair of generations at a time.
Again, I'd be delighted to be proven wrong on this point. But it seems to me that it runs against Apple's grain to let the design stand still while the internals change for more than a few years at a time, especially on a device that's intended to exhibit bleeding-edge design.
I remember the same kind of "long-term commitment" expressed by Sculley about the latest Apple II models back in 1992 or so...until they were replaced a few months later by the Mac LC, never to be seen again.
yes. Apple will be selling batteries/internals/screens for these Edition watches for a very, very, very long time.

Do you think that Apple is going to keep the internals up to date so that the watch remains useful on a daily basis, or do you think that you're going to keep the watch on a shelf as a treasured relic? You can't have it both ways.
No I'm not mad in the slightest. I just don't have any more time to wasted on bigoted clowns such as yourself.
Then you shouldn't have posted to me in the first place if you didn't have time. Making it even worse by posting to me a second time which required me to waste my time posting to you again. Wouldn't a clown be someone that calls himself "Lord"
That saying has been around since before Richard Sherman was born.
Richard Sherman made that statement to Tom Brady in a 2012 regular season game. Sadly for Sherman he got spanked in this years Super Bowl which is great seeing I'm from New England.
10,000 freaking dollars for something that will be useless in less than three years. One has to be REALLY an idiot to buy it, quite frankly. Now where are those geniuses who said that Apple would sell one for less than USD 3,000 given its massive economies of scale? Of course not since gold is a very scarce resource, pundits.
Today's best announcement by far: the new MacBooks - all the rest is irrelevant.
Now my question to Ben Frost: are you gonna buy an "Apple Watch Edition"?
But every round-faced luxury watch is a unique design that doesn't have anything in common with any other round-faced luxury watch, right?
Apple paid $21 million dollars for this:
Luxury watches have copyrightable design and style in everything from their fixed watch faces to their bezel designs, ridges, textures, et al.
There is absolutely NOTHING unique about Apple's watch mimimalist design worthy of copyright, except possibly the placement and function of the digital crown. Unlike the iPhone, Apple cannot claim anybody else copied their unique design, because by all appearances, Apple copied theirs.

I understand that, but that saying has been around for a long time. Richard only made it famous.
I think the main issue here is this is a whole new category of product for Apple. It's not a new device in their iOS or Mac lineup. It's jewellery. Whether you like it or not is a separate issue. Whether they'll succeed in selling jewellery at these prices also remains to be seen.

Considering Apple will only support iOS 8 back to the iPhone 4s it's a fairly safe bet five years from now the first generation watch will not be supported by Apple or be able to interact with the current OS five years from now. It's reasonable to assume the iWatch won't even need an iPhone at some point.
I also missed on the stainless steel one figure around $500 not all the way to $1000, that is steep and the $1000 one will probably be the one I wanted with steel band.
steel begins at $549. start with that and ask for a matching band on your anniversary.
Yes they are mad and no I am not jealous. I could actually afford one but I won't since it's completely unnecessary and shows everything that's wrong with our society today. It's a bad image for Apple in my opinion to go for the luxurious market. Last time I checked Apple was a consumer company not a luxurious brand like Rolex, Rolls Royce and so on...
newsflash -- the wealthy have been wearing gold jewelry since history began. oops.
also, apple has been an "affordable luxury" company for quite some time. often referred to as the BMW or Mercedes of computers. why not watches?
Do these 10k versions have $9k worth of gold? It seems that the only difference between each collection is the materials. Functionally, they appear to be the same, so I'm curious to know what you get for the additional $9k.
that isn't how profit margins work. $1000 of profit on a 10k item? dream on.
Why on earth anyone (at least anyone who frequents Apple-centric sites like AI/etc) is surprised by this, I have no idea.
John Gruber of DF has been pointing out that comparable 18K Gold watches sell for 10K for weeks now, and all of the recent news re. marketing/positioning/etc. has made it very, very clear that the gold version is NOT targeted towards Joe Sixpack.

First of all no I like to take full credit for my posts. Second YOU MAD BRO. There now I fit your standards.

He sounds like "Dr Dre", that's for sure.
Damn then maybe we can get a Dr Dre signature edition watch.

Ha!
I think you know the answer to that question.
I pity the fools who do buy it.
The level of incivility in this thread is...disappointing.

I almost sprayed my coffee out of my nose... Talk about upping one's way of displaying not only their Apple fandom, but wealth too!!!
Ouch... "Limited" is an understatement. I wonder if Apple will release sales figures for this pricey little jewel.
has apple ever released per-model sales figures for iPhones or iPads?
My shot from the hip at the original event was only $5K and I caught some flak for that. Gruber was dead on.
I'm slightly curious why Apple didn't create a MO video of the gold though.
and even Gruber was over-priced on the low-ends... $549 for the steel aint too shabby. looks like steel for me, sport for her.

I'll gladly wait until next year when the Gen 1 Gold will be able to be had on eBay for around $500.
try this on for size -- original iPhone $1,000 on eBay:

They're going after the Mitt Romney crowd.
