Project "Wolf" and "Presley" in July?
MY OPINION IS ALSO WITHIN THIS THREAD.
“Wolf” has been a project for over 3 years and will be shipped later this year. The summer of 99, Apple acquired elite kernel and assembler programmers from some friends in Mountain View. This team is less than 6 and has been working on the “Wolf” project and my understanding is they are flipping brilliant.
“Wolf” is Apple Advanced Clustering Network Foundation. I don’t know all the details but I felt it was time to share it for what its worth. Here’s what I know and what I’ve been able to piece together.
- “Wolf” is a code name for Apple Advanced Clustering Network Foundation
- Once you install Wolf (upgrade, patch, software?), you are able to use parallel processing at the kernel level
- Processing runs over TCP/IP
- ALL applications will have access to “Wolf”
- The network is similar to Peer to Peer
- You can process jobs on any “Wolf” enabled Macintosh
- You can share your computer resources to the network
- It utilizes ZeroConf as a service
- A demo of a 8 Mac “Wolf” cluster ripped an entire 120 minute movie in under 15 seconds.
- This is extremely advanced technology
- Team was acquired from elite people from Mountain View, CA
- Team is less than 6 and all have PHD’s and are considered to have written the book on clustering.
- You can “start” a Wolf job on the east coast, turn off your book, fly to the west coast, get on the net and your job is completed and delivered.
- (tough to explain because I don’t know what this means) Data is sent back and forth through “vectorization mode”. Binary data is converted in real-time to vector data, converted to ascii, parsed-mapping and then sent back. ( I have no idea)
- Metro cities will see higher responses than rural areas based upon number of Macs in regions.
- I’ve been told this has also been called “David’s Stone” like “Glove”
- You can close off any local “Wolf” cluster similar to an Airport network.
- Its yet another reason to switch to a Mac.
- I have more but info, but this is a start for now.
“Presley” is the code name given to the new optical NO BUTTON TWO CLICK mouse.
- More later
And as for the other thread, like I said, its not going to be my decision to post the “Lucida” picture to the boards. That’s going to be left up to the individual. I also have tons more information about her too. Guess what? There’s more than just one Lucida camera. One has built in 802.11g which also means a new Airport is not that far away.
I’ll be back in a few weeks. Traveling aboard.

So...you could build a cluster to hammer out Lightwave renders. App would auto recognise extra cluster nodes at system level?
Two button mouse? Never!

Like, people use their macs as public "Wolf"ies and people use them for whate'er?
Whatever happens, this is going to be the best MacWorld yet!
Just throwing a wrench in hear. Similarly I find no record of Apple acquiring such a team. I DID however find an interesting article about a Novell Project. (http://news.com.com/2100-1033-279324.html?tag=bplst) funny how it is called wolf and is out of Mountain View. Then here is another one about the Mountain View Wolf Project Clusters (http://news.com.com/2100-1033-278310.html?tag=bplst) Cleverly there are dozens of cluster projects in the mountian view area. We have SGI, Dreamworks, and many others, all using graphic rendering decoding clusters. I don't see 6 folks reengineering the way people computer. THAT alone is resered for Steve-O. The type of magic 'community processor' is way too sci-fi. Bandwidth being bottleneck #1, and #2, looking at TCP/IP as the effective mode of transport? I dont' think so. The direct connect cluster groups which are all optically chained (using some full duplex or token passing system) has always been the fastest way to decode jobs. What magic mega server would handle such a distrubutive computing system? I don't think the average joe has a major video rip to do which needs to be done in 12 seconds. (or whatever)
Also, lucidia having airport? Not likely. I have 12 labs which all use airport. The simple fact that adding airport adds over $100 per unit and adds almost NO extra value is obvious. The 802.11g is still just a varient of the burst fire transfer protocols. If lucidia did feature airport you'd have to double it's battery carrying capacity and you'd have to have ONLY solid state media so that is could attempt to stream. Even using highly compressed MPEG4 I still say this is an old rumor. What's the point in roaming up to 100 ft from a terminal anyway? Full screen video would kill the bandwith on it so fast that real use of airport would be crippled by all the transmissions. IF lucidia is real (and we have no proof of it) and IF it had the ability to use airport, there would be a tiny market for it, and it would cost too darn much. DV, and firewire transfers still are faster then anything else out there. Airport is not being pushed by Apple as a major technology. It is more like an 'also there' technology. I don't buy your story. Anyone else care to take a jab at him or me?
As for the mouse. Who cares? The current version of the mouse has NO button. And it also has 'two clicks'. If you mean two buttons, big deal, they simply have a rocker in the middle of the mouse. Lean left, it left clicks. Lean right, it right clicks. Big secret huh? If it even exists.

Hey, can some admin check the IP logs and confirm this? Check his 6 posts and look for the same domain etc. I'd say creating rampant rumors about Apples direction is this guy's forte. If he is abroad, I bet he lives in the caves of Afganistan. I think this is major hoax #2 from him. Two seperte posts, both of which have 2 different secret codenames of Apple projects? I'd reiterate what someone else once said. Either he's crazy, or on Monday he'll be looking for another job. Apple's bathtub doesn't tolerate leaks.

Wolf sounds like a killer, if they can make it safe. I read the post as basically saying that any internet-enabled mac can be turned into a beowolf cluster node. This means that someone really stupid can share their mac processor across the net for (any?) specific projects and end up calculating missile trajectories for Osama's dirty bombs without knowing
If they get around that one, it could be a really cool. Call it community computing
G4 clusters is nothing new:

If wolf is real, then i could use it to compile my c++ apps using my pbg4, wireless ibook with zero conf and an imac to decrease the compile times but factors.
Let's say you have a office of 75 macs. (10.2)
then say you rip lots of qt movies. wolf would let you steal cycles from the accounting and secretary machines and decrease the rip time big time.
<strong>{snip}C'mon - Apple probably has more than four projects (and hence more than four codenames) running at any given time.

</strong><hr></blockquote>
Agreed. Apple must have SEVERAL codenames running at once. But to have 4 of them, all leaked by the same 'source'. PHake, with a capital PH. Like the post below your said. Nobody would need this. Real users GET clusters. A current example of this distributed community computing is the SETI program. See how 'blazing fast' that is? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> I don't buy this guy's posts. If he is an insider, he is dead meat. If he isn't, he needs to put up, AND shut up. At least I don't claim to know the secrets of the universe. I just give my thoughts. BTW, did you get the most recent dirt on two MORE of Apple's projects? Codemane "GOTCHA" and "SUCKA". They make up a comprehensive new strategy to fool the AI group and to spanw a bunch of pointless threads. Just doing my part to put this one to bed before it ends up being 9 pages like the lucida stuff.
"wolf aware" photoshop filtering. "wolf" after effects rendering and more etc. etc.
<strong>Then say you rip lots of qt movies. wolf would let you steal cycles from the accounting and secretary machines and decrease the rip time big time.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Just a counter question. Who sits in the office all day ripping QT movies? And why buy all the employee's G4s just so you can steal 5% of their processor? Why not get them iMac's or eMacs and use the extra money to buy a cluster? The argument is age old and boring. Cluster's beat colaborative computing any day of the week. This guy is a FAKE. Don't dignify his post with a response.
On a personal note. I like that posting 3 threads in a row. All short, one of which was 1 word. Very professional.. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
Buy two computers, get a third in the network. With an installed network something like this in the OS for free (?) would add some serious value!

<strong>Hey is somebody here have any info on the new Apple's project : turtle ?</strong><hr></blockquote>
yeah, thats the code name for the G4 chip

because they already did. notice how all apple's desktops are g4s?

Umm both of those have g4s

yes i don't buy it either but scotphd said the whole concept of it was stupid waste.
thanks.
