The Irony Theory
I have had this theory for awhile about Apple. See what you think:
As Microsoft began stealing Windows (and continued to) Steve Jobs would call Gates and scream at him about the theft of the Mac GUI. According to the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley (which I assume to be mostly accurate), Jobs would get all pissy and order Gates to see him. Gates would comply and eventually convince Steve that Microsoft was no threat to Apple.
What I think may happen now is just the opposite. We have all seeen the reaction to Mac OSX, that is, most people really like it and see its possibilities. Apple even outsold Gateway last quarter, though that may not being saying as much as before.
My theory is that even with Apple's direct anti-windows campaign they have launched, Steve is convincing M$ and Gates that Apple, with its small share, poses no threat to M$. But I think it does and Steve knows it. I think that Apple has a solid product and an OS that is going to reach into new markets (i.e scientific, business, etc). It is already happening on a small scale as we speak.
I think Steve will keep convincing Gates that Apple poses no threat, even as the Mac continues to benefit from its new UNIX roots and Apple attacks Windows directly. Apple will continue to open stores and increase its visibility. M$ will be tied to an ailing PC market (which I only see improving marginally in the next five years).
That's my theory folks.
