Coppertino on Wednesday launched a new cloud music locker called Loop, while Google updated its Docs and Slides iOS apps to enable inserting freshly-snapped photos.

Coppertino's Loop

Available through Coppertino's Vox players for Mac and iPhone, Loop offers unlimited online music storage, unlike alternatives such as iTunes Match. Another distinguishing factor is support for a wide variety of file formats, including not just MP3 but options like CUE, FLAC, and WAV.

Although files must be uploaded or downloaded via a Mac, both the iOS and OS X apps can be used to listen to collections and organize them. The pair also support offline caching.

Loop access costs $5 per month, or $50 per year. To run Vox users must have at least a Mac with OS X 10.9 and/or an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 7.1.

Google Docs and Slides

New to the iOS versions of Docs and Slides is the ability to capture new photos using the camera, instead of simply inserting pre-existing images. In Slides, users can even perform some basic editing in the form of cropping and masking.

Slides has also been updated with the ability to insert tables. Both apps are free downloads, and run on any device with iOS 7.0 or later.

I doubt that Apple is too worried, but "Cupertino" is a noun often used to reference Apple Inc., and "Loop" is part of Apple's main address. So for a few seconds I thought "Coppertino / Loop" was an Apple product. As a result maybe Apple should get concerned about trademark infringement. No doubt people will think I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. But it actually did confuse me. What are the chances that this company is trying to exploit this confusion?

Are they trying to exploit the near-association? Sure. Do you think the same thing of another blog named The Loop?

I don't think Apple would get very far trying to claim the city name, though - the city pre-existed and has first dibs on that one. Is there an example with Redmond you could point to?

Yep, a quite blatant attempt at duping customers into thinking it’s an Apple service. Not very creative or clever but blatant nonetheless.

He said nothing about Apple taking any kind of legal action. He merely pointed out that it could confuse others as it did him for a second. It’s very intentional and very contrived. For that reason alone I wouldn’t give this service a first look. And these services are becoming a dime-a-dozen like seed sown on rocky ground. Most won’t be around for any length of time which puts this whole cloud platform idea on shaky ground for the future.

I agree, deliberately similar to the point of being silly. Their next product will no doubt be Coppertino Infinity.

Sorry, he did mention being confused, and speculating about Apple looking at pursuing trademark infringement. Any time I hear something like "confusingly similar" it trips the whole trademark discussion for me internally.

BTW, your "seed sown on rocky ground" is poetry. Thank you for having written it.

Straight out of the Bible, actually. Mark 4:16

"Loop offers unlimited online music storage, unlike alternatives such as iTunes Match."

Ummm.. iTunes Match is unlimited music storage..

This goes on the "Dur" pile for blog posts.. iCloud is storage based for all other files.. iTunes Match has no limit.. it's $25/year flat; no limit.

I thought iTunes Match was limited to 25k songs? And only MP3/ AAC right?

Of course it'd make no sense to store WAV files online and FLAC/ SHN doesn't play on iTunes straight off the bat, so Match is good for what it offers.

I use the amazing and free utility XLD to convert anything I need to first, it is blindingly bast and works in batches simply by dragging a folder onto the icon, totally idiot proof.

I must admit I am puzzled why Apple hasn't introduced tiers as they have with Photos for storage rather than the single fixed limit. Maybe that's in the works now they have really got iCloud up and running full tilt. The limit is only for your own music remember, not iTunes purchases.

Over all, for the convenience (not to mention the safety of storing your music off site), cross device seamless usage (playlists etc.) and ease of use I think iTunes Match is a steal for the price.

In case anyone was wondering here are a few facts: You can match or upload music formats that can be played with iTunes, including AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, and more. iTunes Match supports up to 10 devices — including your computer, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple TV. All the music iTunes matches plays back from iCloud at 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free quality — even if your original copy was of lower quality.

You are partially correct, the limit is for your own music at the moment and does not include iTunes purchases
