My iMac early 2009 freezing issue

Posted:
in Genius Bar edited June 2015

Quick question.

Almost every day my iMac early 2009 freezes with no reason. Only thing I can do is hard reset. What to do, what is the cause. What to provide, any log? Where to find it?

Please help.

If your system is locking up with the following message:

there should be a kernel panic log file in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. If it's just freezing up and beachballing without a message, your hard drive could be failing. Hard drives have a typical lifespan of 5 years (although they can last longer), your iMac is 6 years old. Make sure to make a backup of all your data, if you don't already. You're using over 300GB so an external hard drive would be the cheapest backup option:

    http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Ultra-Portable-External-Drive/dp/B00E83X9P8

You can make a clone of everything with 3rd party software which makes restoring to a new internal drive easier, like the following software:

    https://bombich.com

or you can use Time Machine.

    Thanks for that.

I suspect also reheating, but it just a theory.

Is there any good software to check hard drive, looking for bad sectors?

Usually these things are related to hardware or drivers. If you changed anything recently before this started happening, it would be the first thing to examine. For example if you recently upgraded ram, I would suggest testing it. It certainly didn't ship with 8GB at that time, and I don't know whether that was a very recent change. The logs you pasted there aren't helpful. I would follow Marvin's suggestion. They may provide some clue.

Disk Utility in /Applications/Utilities can run a basic scan for drive faults but this would just be software-related. Hardware faults rarely show up in these programs. If hardware freezes, all the software running freezes up on it too so it doesn't see anything wrong. You can test doing large file copies of a few gigabytes and see if it locks up during this.

You can monitor temperatures with software like the following:

You can do that, but if it panics at high temperatures, that's a sign of failing hardware. Otherwise it would shut down somewhere between 200 and 215 F.

A very good application, I find, for checking harddrives is DriveDx. It gives you a full diagnostic on 15+ parameters. AND it will compare the make of your hdd to an ever growing database to give you an estimate of due to which errors and when... your model is most likely to fail...

    Very precise-
