Actually, this is a planned outage, as noted in the May 2 iTools update:

Whew, I thought I was in more serious trouble with that password thing. I tried "trashing" all my Mailboxes and prefs (I didn't actually delete any of it), and it still kept asking for authentication incessantly. Write this one up as another bug in Mail.
