Apple Goes To War

Apple?s new ?Switch-campaign? is way cool, but there is much more to it than meets the eye. Here?s to conspiracy:

1. Steve Jobs is nobody's fool.

2. Apple is going into harms way at a time when the PC market is in the middle of it?s worst crisis ever.

3. Bill Gates and his henchmen in Redmond have egos the size of mountains and the ?siege-mentality? in their genes. They never give an inch without a fight whatsoever.

4. Microsoft is not offering the kind of leadership (market development) or incentives (real or perceived) that spurs the need and excitement the PC-market needs to move forward.

5. Microsoft for all it?s power can?t afford losing market share to Apple. The stock market demands perfection, not that the money matters all that much, but even a 3 % decrease means their overall growth rate will stop dead.

6. Microsoft is extending into many new markets. The byproduct of this omnipresence is complexity of mammoth proportions. Making it all work on basically the same platform is one heck of a challenge, not to mention expensive. In stretching their resources Microsoft are about to meet the theory of ?imperial over stretch?. Not to mention some new and very big competitors.

7. Microsoft?s goodwill is running out of steam. Lots of costumers, with huge investments in their products, have a hard time finding the anticipated ?return of investment?. Microsoft?s new pricing- and licensing-policy is no crowd pleaser either.

8. In sum - Microsoft is fundamentally in a much weaker position now than ten years ago. Their ability to maneuver freely is constrained both legally and politically. 30+ billion dollar in the bank can?t change that.

9. For Apple, the time to make a major move on Microsoft has not been this good since the mid to late 80?s. And this time around Apple is much wiser and fundamentally in a strong position.

10. By trash-talking Windows Apple also have to put their money where their mouth is. And they better have some new ace up their selves or this little war could cost them dearly. Resting on past laurels just won?t cut it.

Bring it on Apple!
