Disk Utility Startup

Hi, i have a May, 2009 MacBook with the latest El Capitan.

 

I was trying to boot up with disk utility with the Command + R mode, But when i do that it just goes to the grey boot up screen and starts booting up to login screen. Is it something with my HDD, or my generation of MacBook? Thanks!
