most amazing machine I've ever used....

2 more questions...

what is a good mac internet service provider

what is a better browser than ie?

by the way the ipod is the most amazing piece of engineering work ive ever seen.

Alan

This guy was really critical of my Rev A 500 back when i got it in Feb 2001. Then he tried to reinstall Win2k on his Vaio, found that his Firewire CD wasn't bootable, and I think blew he a fuse.

Judging by the number of my computer savvy friends who are switching, I don't think Apple's lowered earning estimates are at all correct. I think Apple is having a decent quarter, at least.

I think Apple is doing great with all these new people making the switch. Once you go Mac you don't go back and for those 1 or 2 people that still don't like Apple after they get a Mac are retarded. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Hey Radar, if you're member #14 (how you got that figure beats me), then what number does that make ME? My AI registration was January '99...until AI had it's big downtime, whereupon my registration info disappeared...

As far as the switching goes, I've got friends that I'd really like to get to switch....I just need to dangle my iBook running OSX in front of them some more.....

I have two friends who just got TiBooks. Both of them were previously Win2k users. Alan is quite computer savvy, but he's not a CS student or a technical fellow. Al (another guy named Al, believe it or not), on the other hand, was a CS student who dual booted into Mandrake in order to take care of his unix needs. Now OS X can take care of that, and it's nice not to dual boot.

I don't know exactly why I posted the thread, but I have lately been noticing a generally more pleasant attitude towards Apple, and I think the Switch Ads are very accurate.

to be honest i think the command line and Unix core have removed the "candy" or "toy" feeling people had towards the Mac OS.

It's made a huge difference. Now IT folk show interest instead of scorn when you mention you're running OSX (as opposed to OS 9 or earlier).

I own a Vaio and am shopping for a new notebook, and honestly I'm looking at the Vaio more than the Powerbook.

Feature wise, price and raw power goes to the PC notebooks, style and convenience goes to the Mac.

But honestly, right now Apple's notebooks just aren't worth it

if you're shopping, wait until after July 15th, at MWNY. at least then you'll know what the new line up will be across the board.

as for the price to features thing, which VAIO were you looking at? i've been less than impressed with PC offerings lately in the notebook area, but if you've come across some nice ones i'd love to see them. people are always asking me what a nice PC notebook is, haven't really had much to tell them lately.

    Right now I own a PCG-F350, its a PII-366 with 14.1" TFT

I might just upgrade it because like you said PC side is somewhat lacking and I feel more so towards the Mac.

Right now I've been reading up on the newer stuff via the 'net and going tomorrow to actually check out that 16" UXGA Vaio

Tell me what you find that's nice.

I'd like to take a look at what there is on the PC side.

Saw the Sony today, it was super sweet but the battery life was terrible, only lasted like an hour of full use.

The Sony subnotebook Vaio was nice, but was a bit to small keyboard wise.

Might take a trip in the next week or so to the Apple Store in Buffalo (Like an hr away) and checkout their stuff.

actually, that's exactly what i'm talking about.

i've seen half a dozen PC laptops that are sweet. totally rock. problem? they weight 8 lbs. and have less that 2 hour battery life at real world usage.

along the same lines there are at least a dozen that are lightweight with decent battery life on them. Problem is most of those need a "docking station" to have full functionality.

i want a laptop that has great battery life, decent speed and a full spread of drives/ports available w/o a docking station.

when you start looking along those lines, it seriously cuts back on the competition.

the one exception i saw was a nice, higher end Gateway of all laptops. Had the internal wireless, good speed, nice screen, good battery life. went to the store to look at it.

of all the stupid things in the world, it had a horrible trackpad. i couldn't even think about buying it, 'cause i would have never been able to use the trackpad.

that was about a month or so ago, and i haven't come across anything that's made me change my opinion since then.

hence the interest in someone else's look into the area.
