How does Apple determine location of stores

Just wondering how Apple decides where to open each Apple Store.

Is it based on installed Apple user base in a particular area?

Or is a location where their research says is a strong PC base who may switch?

Or is it just a matter of ploping a store in any trendy well trafficked mall?

It's mostly the latter...putting boutique products in boutique settings with lots of foot traffic / window shoppers.

They first elminate areas where Appleinsider posters are! (That is to insure reasonable sales and not just 'just looking" know-it-all people). Then they look for locations that have high foot traffic, a demographic area where Apple has traditionally had good sales, and a location among "better" retailers.

They use outsource companies that provide retail demographic data. It's a science. Location and high profile are important too of course, but Apple wants an approximate figure on how much the average user/shopper in the area makes and spends. In other words "racial profiles"!

Just kidding! But serious, they do a lot of research to figure out the typical person who will walk by the store, and how to market to them. The "Switch" ads may help...

Come on Steve, get your lazy butt up here to Canada. They make dogsleds now that are more than large enough to haul a PowerMac back to the igloo.
