Any current update on nMP?

It's been like couple of months since there were any rumors related to nMP.  Do you guys think there will be another nMP refresh this year or will it be silent?  There's been lot of talks on mbp and macbook...and etc...but barely on MP.

The processors for the next update have yet to be released. Intel has to release E5 v4 Xeon processors, the following site says this will happen in April:

    http://wccftech.com/ebay-xeon-e5-2600-v4-broadwell-ep-listing/

Due to price, the Mac Pro will likely top out at the 18-core/36-thread E5-2697v4.

When it comes to the new GPUs, Apple will want to be using the next-gen 14nm/16nm ones. AMD's Polaris GPUs and NVidia's Pascal are expected by mid-2016. There will likely be more details of some high-end GPUs for computing at the upcoming GPU tech conference in April:

    http://www.gputechconf.com

Both AMD and NVidia depend a lot on PC gamers so they will be showing new gaming GPUs off at GDC in about 3 weeks:

    http://wccftech.com/amd-radeon-technologies-group-plans-to-spice-up-gdc/

A MP update might arrive in April but I would expect it later. They can show it off at WWDC and talk about the new TB3, perhaps they'll have a new Retina Thunderbolt display. It would be best launching the new MP with the display so that people buy both together.

Expect up to 18-core, up to 2x GPU performance, 2x video memory (12GB), faster and possibly larger SSD (up to 3GB/s), more RAM support (up to 512GB) and DDR4, TB3 supporting 5K displays and 10Gbps ethernet.

Would Apple increase the price due to higher core? What is your opinion about AMD Polaris? Would it be a big bump? and do you think it would be useful for avid or premiere pro? Thanks.

Take the difference in cpu list pricing between the 18 core and the previously used 12 core. Make sure you use the right model and look at launch pricing. Add 30-35% to that difference. That is typically a good approximation of the expected price difference, and it has been consistent. Note that the Xeon chipsets are normally used for 2 generations. Apple skipped Sandy Bridge and Haswell, so it would seem like they intend to do one refresh per chipset.

If you're concerned about the bump in Premiere or Avid, I would suggest checking creativecow or something similar after they're released. Early benchmarks aren't always very helpful.

If the chip prices are the same then Apple wouldn't have a price increase due to higher cores. If you look at the prices on the same chip model with different counts, the prices are roughly the same:

http://ark.intel.com/products/75283/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2697-v2-30M-Cache-2_70-GHz (current 12-core Mac Pro chip)
http://ark.intel.com/products/81059/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-2697-v3-35M-Cache-2_60-GHz (Apple skipped this 14-core one)

E5-2697v4 with 18-cores should be priced roughly the same.

AMD Polaris and NVidia's Pascal are being hyped as being huge improvements. They are talking about double the performance per watt and the memory bandwidth in both is increasing a lot. You can only really judge it on the shipping product so like I say in 3 weeks time at the games developer conference, they will have demoes of gaming chips and it will be clear how they compare to the last generation. The fact that it's moving from 28nm to 14nm/16nm indicates that it will be a significant improvement.

This will help in things like Final Cut Pro, Premiere, After Effects etc where the GPU is used and gaming/3D software. For hardware accelerated video encoding it will help too.

It won't be until late this year I would imagine.   Apple will want to ship stable next gen hardware in the platform probably including GPUs with embedded RAM.  I just don't think everything will be ready until late in the year.

The next generation GPUs will be very interesting.  How they will impact specific software packages won't be known until the GPUs ship.  However anything bandwidth limited to RAM will benefit as that is a big selling point with the new hardware.   The problem here is that not all software is bandwidth limited in the GPU memory space.

These next generation GPUs are such a significant improvement that I'm really hoping that Apple holds off the Mac Pro upgrade for these GPUs.   For the top end you will see significant performance increases.   For the midrange you will likely see cooler operation.    One interesting possibility is that the lower end GPU configurations could come on one card.   The lower wattage combined with memory in the chip could see Apple/AMD designing a single GPU card for the entry level Mac Pro yet retaining dual GPUs.   We might even see a price reduction.

I hope they go with a dual socket board this time.  Current lineup isn't fast enough to justify upgrading to.  If they stick with a single socket, I can't imagine a reason to upgrade to it either.

I hate to say it, but I NEED A FASTER HORSE!

I keep delaying the inevitable switch to PC...I'll wait to see what Apple offers and decide.

I know I'm not the only one in Hollywood thinking this (including some Oscar winners).

Hey, guys.  It appears the next xeon chip is suppose to broadwell-ep, yes? Wasn't that suppose to be released this quarter? 1st quarter i meant.

There are some samples of the v4 Broadwell-EP on eBay and it says they will launch officially in April:

    http://wccftech.com/ebay-xeon-e5-2600-v4-broadwell-ep-listing/

but there's also the GPUs to be released. AMD could always give Apple the Polaris chips early considering they are custom-built but if they aren't in production yet, they might not be available until later in the year. AMD isn't doing so well financially and when companies cut back on orders, suppliers give priority to other companies. Nvidia threatened to stop using TSMC in the past so they have been giving priority to their GPUs. NVidia Pascal is due around May-June, AMD's GPUs have been noted as launching in Q3. There will be more details about when AMD can ship their GPUs after GDC next week.

Thanks, Marvin.  I was wondering how legit is that website? I know people were saying that some websites are a joke..or not legit.  So is AMD card what APPLE will continue with?  In the website, they said in April...so I'm wondering if it will arrive shortly.  But then...Apple knows the plan...

The tech rumor sites tend to have reliable info on components because the component manufacturers don't really go out of their way to hide what they are doing. They need to attract manufacturers to use their components and they need to reassure shareholders about release schedules. It's to be expected that they will post rumors that aren't necessarily accurate:

    http://wccftech.com/iphone-5-se-retail-box-exposure/

The Xeon chips are showing up on eBay:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Xeon-v4-Processor-Broadwell-EP-CPU-2-2GHz-18-Core-QH26-ES-Beats-E5-2698-v3-/351653655238

A manufacturer of motherboards listed availability of the Xeon chips as Q2 (April-June):

    http://www.kitguru.net/components/cpu/matthew-wilson/intel-to-release-broadwell-e-processors-in-q2/

Some chip models have a staggered roll-out though so the models Apple wants to use might not be available until later.

I think Apple will continue with AMD because of both price and the fact that AMD support OpenCL better. I don't know what's going to happen in the long-term for AMD. They keep making big losses ($2.3b in the last 4 years). Their liabilities exceed their assets just now by over $400m. Maybe their new Polaris GPUs will help out but if not and those losses continue to mount up, they might not be able to continue operating much longer.

If that's the case...i'm guessing Apple will go back to Nvida...or use their own chips...which I don't know if they can even handle intense workload.
