Does any one out there think that wireless access could eventualy

go to city and county wide. Just as FM and AM broadcasting is today. Its

got to happpen someday. Maybe it wishfull thinking, but there is already an underground of WiFi pirater's out there building wireless

access nodes in small sections of a city. i read an artical in a computer techonlogy zine about how these pirate wireless node are running off of

a laptop, a wireless router , WiFi card and a homemade antenna made out of a pringles can. Supposedly if someone were to go to central park

in NYCity with a laptop and a wireless card you can hop right on to a

pirated wireless stream.

The possiblities would be vast when an entire city is wirelessly linked with the world. city, state, goverment, hacker etc...

The technology is there, almost, even radio stations could benifit .

Fear will be the bigest hurdle.

There must some web sites out there with info on the current developments..just have'nt had a chance to search....maybe some one

can help and provide links for everyone in Mac land....thanx....

Thing is, that would cost money to the subscribers unless there were Ad's....so, yeah, it would be awesome, but it would cost people money

Seems the cable company has rained on the parade a little though.

Well, thats why I love my school. In the next couple of months, the campus will be completely wireless. I think that there are some other schools who are approaching this as well. Being on a college campus is almost like being in a tiny city, so i know what you mean, and hell yes! that would be awesome.

It has been rumored that Bill Gates started the company and provides funding even though Mobilgates officially says there is no association

    to Bill.

I guess moBillGates.com would have been to obvious.

Yeah, I read that earlier today. I may have to drive out to Athens one weekend once that thing's up and running just to check it out...although, if I do, I'll probably want to leave my computer at home and just bring some drinking money so I can go check out the music scene.

I think Wired Magazine wrote an article about this. The basic idea is that each individual device would act as a node in the network. The device could route other devices data and extend the range. This idea only works in populated areas however. Complete nation wide coverage of 10 mbs would require some very large attennas.

The above site is the IEEE802.16 site. The group is working on a Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN) It looks like the standard is completed already. I haven't read any of the info yet just crossed paths with it looking for 802.11g (54Mbps AirPort).
